Sports bettors struck gold Saturday night when Andre Ward shocked the world by stopping Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev inside eight rounds.
Ward by KO/TKO paid around 12 to 1 at most online sportsbooks.
While the former US Olympic gold medalist was a slight favorite to win a decision at -120, many saw it going the distance or believed that Kovalev would have the best shot at winning inside the distance.
Bettors with a crystal ball could have netted as much as $5,000 for every $100 risked for Ward winning anywhere from rounds 7 to 9.
Kovalev protested the decision of referee Tony Weeks to stop the bout, though the Russian slugger clearly stopped defending himself after a devastating, if not low, body shot. Kovalev was dazed and hurt badly with a right hand earlier in the bout and appeared to have lost all energy following the vicious body shot. Kovalev demanded an immediate rematch in his post-fight interview with HBO's Max Kellerman.
The attention of boxing bettors now turns to August 26; a date that Miguel Cotto will be taking the squared circle again … okay, the date that Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor will be locking horns in an unprecedented boxing vs. UFC super fight. Sportsbooks have installed Mayweather as a suspiciously low -700 betting favorite against the Irishman. Track Mayweather vs. McGregor odds and line movement using SBR Odds.
