Tennessee vs. Mississippi State

Odds Overview

A late game Saturday sees Mississippi State entertainTennessee at Davis Wade Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 9:00 PM EST and you cancatch the action live on ESPN2.

There is not a lot of separation between these teams interms of the college football odds. The Bulldogs are favored by just one fieldgoal.

Making a play on the total will be interesting, consideringthe OVER is 4-0 for Tennessee and the UNDER is 4-0 for Mississippi State. Whatgives this weekend? The O/U is at 57 points.

Tennessee Volunteers

BEtting Odds

In one of the games of the weekend, the Volunteers foughtback admirably against Georgia, only to fall short 51-44.

We wouldn’t be surprised if tons of UT fans turned overtheir TVs when their team was down 27-10 early in the second quarter.

A shame that would have been considering the Volunteersfought back to tie the game at 30 by halftime. The second half didn’t havequite as many fireworks and ultimately Tennessee lost by a touchdown.

In the loss, Tyler Bray was up-and-down. He had 281 passingyards and two touchdown passes, but was picked off three times as well. TheVolunteers defense was torched for a season-high 51 points though, with much ofthe trouble coming with stopping the run.

The defeat to the Bulldogs left Tennessee at 3-2 SU and 2-3ATS. The Vols covered easily as 13.5-point underdogs last weekend for theirfirst ATS success in a month. Can they cash as dogs again this Saturday? Odds makers have set the line at a field goal in favore of the home team.

Mississippi State Bulldogs

Have you seen the teams they’ve played? Yeah, yeah. The Bulldogs are 5-0 and four of their wins havecome by double digits.

Blessed with a cupcake schedule in the first five weeks ofthe season, Mississippi State has been the clear-cut favorites for every one oftheir games and has simply done what they were expected to do.

Last weekend the Bulldogs beat Kentucky 27-14, with TylerRussell throwing for 269 passing yards and two touchdowns and LaDarius Perkinsamassing 110 rushing yards and a score. Chad Bumphis had nine catches for 104yards and a touchdown.

Russell, Bumphis Perkins have been getting it done allseason. Russell may be only completing 56.6 percent of his passes, but he has10 touchdowns and only one interception through five games. Six of thosetouchdowns have been caught by Bumphis. Perkins meanwhile is one yard shy of500 rushing yards and has six rushing TDs to his name already.

College Football Pick

Personally, I’m not too impressed with the Bulldogs. Theirunblemished record is a product of their easy opening schedule more thananything else. They’ve yet to face a true good team this season.

Delving deeper, Mississippi State’s opponents so far havehad a combined total record of 8-19. Auburn, South Alabama and Kentucky havebeen especially brutal.

The Volunteers will be the biggest obstacle yet by far andwill make a game of this. Tennessee has had a far tougher schedule – Georgia,Florida and even North Carolina State are all looking good this season – andthat should have them prepared for this trip to Starkville.

Defensively, the Bulldogs have kept teams in check so far,but Tyler Bray and Tennessee possess a far more potent offense than anythingthey’ve had to contend with. I actually like the Vols to win this game straightup but will gladly put those pointson my picks ticket as insurance.
