BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - JUNE 16: Stephen Curry #30 of the Golden State Warriors raises the Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award after defeating the Boston Celtics 103-90 in Game Six of the 2022 NBA Finals at TD Garden on June 16, 2022 in Boston, Massachusetts. The Golden State Warriors won their fourth NBA title in eight seasons, and Steph Curry captured the first NBA Finals MVP of his career, and those results were bad news for BetMGM.

Jason Scott, the VP of Trading for BetMGM, stated: “The Warriors winning the NBA Championship and Stephen Curry winning the NBA Finals MVP were bad outcomes for the sportsbook. The Warriors and Curry both received strong support from bettors throughout the playoffs.”

Let’s not feel too bad for the sportsbook, however. Even if Curry and the Warriors were the most significant liabilities in those two betting markets, the majority of the money wagered was on others, which means that BetMGM made a profit on both.

Steph Curry dropped 34 points in a championship-clinching Game 6 win. He averaged 31.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game for the series, shooting 48.2% from the field and 43.7% on threes. He was the odds-on favorite to win the Finals MVP going into the final series, and 34.1% of the handle at BetMGM was on Curry.

After falling behind Boston two games to one in the Finals, the Golden State Warriors reeled off three straight wins to take the championship.

The Warriors were responsible for 30.0% of the handle at BetMGM, which still means that a lot of money came in on other teams to win.

Again, this might not have been the best outcome for BetMGM, but it was still a profitable experience for them overall.
