The Indianapolis Colts traded quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders for a package that includes two third-round selections, ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter tweeted Wednesday.

The Commanders will pay Wentz’s entire $28 million salary for the 2022 NFL season, which includes a $5 million roster bonus that is due to be paid next week.

After being selected second overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles and spending five seasons as the franchise starting quarterback, Wentz was dealt last February to the Colts in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and a conditional second-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft that’s since become a first-round selection.

Wentz started 68 games over his five years with the Eagles and led the club to a 35-32-1 record while throwing for 113 touchdowns, a 62.7 completion percentage and 50 interceptions with an 89.2 quarterback rating.

Of course, most notably during his time with Philadelphia, Wentz sustained a back injury late in the 2017 season and gave way to backup quarterback Nick Foles. Foles went on to win Super Bowl LII while also taking MVP Honors for his performance.

The one-year stay with the Colts was far less exciting for Wentz. He started all 17 games last year, and Indianapolis finished 9-8. Wentz threw 27 touchdowns, a 62.4 completion percentage and seven interceptions with a 94.6 quarterback rating.

While the trade probably shores up the quarterback room for the Commanders, it leaves Indianapolis with quarterbacks Sam Ehlinger and James Morgan on the roster.

Ehlinger was a sixth-round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, and Morgan spent the 2021 NFL season bouncing around the practice squads of the Jets, Steelers, Panthers and Colts. Morgan was a fourth-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft.

It’s likely the Colts address the quarterback position during the 2022 NFL Draft, during free agency or in another trade.
