North Carolina College Player Prop Ban Not on Horizon
It's been an exciting year for our best sports betting sites operating in North Carolina. And more good news might be on the horizon as those books move through the first year of legalized operation.
It seems like North Carolina will not be outlawing college sports player props, despite initial reports as far back as April that a ban may be on the horizon.
What's happening in NC?
The North Carolina sports betting scene has only been a legal reality for a handful of months. But one of the nation's most populous states has been thriving nonetheless.
Rep. Marcia Morey, a former college athlete and Olympic swimmer, has argued for banning college player props at North Carolina sports betting apps and retail sites. She had filed House Bill 967 on May 1, but it never made it out of the rules, calendar, and operations committee.
"We’re forgetting about the individuals who are actually playing the game and having the pressure on them. Let’s give them a break," she said shortly before proposing the Bill. But with the 2024 legislative session winding down, it looks like that break won't be coming.
“It is unlikely to move this year,” Hannah Smith, Morey’s legislative assistant, told Covers on July 10.
“It’s terrible. I looked at my DMs and I got like over a hundred messages from people telling me I suck and stuff like that because I didn’t get enough rebounds, so I mean I think it’s definitely a little out of hand," former North Carolina basketball player Armando Bacot said.
The push to ban college props
One of the unique differences from state to state that most directly impacts the consumer is the status of college player prop betting.
NCAA president Charlie Baker has led the charge, asking all legal sports betting states to ban player props.
The Ohio sports betting, Vermont sports betting, and Maryland sports betting scenes have already banned college prop betting markets, and Louisiana sports betting will cease offering those markets on Aug. 1.
But, at least for 2024, it looks like bettors will still be able to take advantage of North Carolina sportsbook promos when they bet on college player props.
