Smart to recruitSmart
Freshman point guard Marcus Smart has turned the Cowboysfrom a pretender into a contender. In one season, Oklahoma State has turned itaround from a 15-18 record last season to a top 25 ranking large in part due tothe overall play of Smart.
He has great size for a guard at 6 foot 4, 225 pounds, andcan play more than one role on the team. His main purpose is to feed the rockto pure scorers such as leading scorer Le’Bryan Nash (19.2 ppg, 6.4 rpg) andjunior guard Markel Brown (14.6 ppg, 5.2 rpg). Nash and Brown are very pleasedwith how well that Smart has fit into the starting lineup and their overallrecord reflects this. On the season, Smart is averaging a well rounded 13.4, 7rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. The freshman will need to workon shooting, as it’s the weakness in his game, but the upside is sky high.
A package deal
Along with Smart comes his fellow high school teammate, guard Phil Forte. Forte see’s a lot of minutes off of the bench (27.4 mpg) andis more of a pure scorer than Smart. In his last 2 games, Forte is averaging 16points per game on 11 of 18 shooting from the field. The freshman can shoot the3 ball and along with Marcus Smart, this team has gotten a lot better veryquickly due to the 2 pickups from Flower Mound, Texas.
With Michael Cobbins injured, this team has lacked depth offof the bench and this could be a problem for the upstart Cowboys.
You can only hope tocontain him….
For the Virginia Tech Hokies, the production of the teamstarts and stops with senior guard. Erick Green. Green is very determined tohave his club improve this season and he’s stated that a victory over OklahomaState would be huge.
On the season, Green is averaging 24.3 points, 5.2 assists,3 rebounds, and 2 steals per game. The senior has met no shot that he wouldn’tpass up, but is a team player and very efficient at that. He’s also shooting50.6% from the field and 86.7% from the free throw line.
If this game is close, Virginia Tech wouldn’t mind havingthe ball in either one of their two top scorers hands. Junior forward JarellEddie is also a major threat at 17.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Eddie isshooting 90.9% from the free throw line and 54.8% from beyond the arc. In orderfor Oklahoma State to remain undefeated, they’ll have find an answer instopping the 1-2 combination of Erick Green and Jarell Eddie.
Both teams are beating their opponents by an average of 15points per game and this will be a close one.
For your basketball picks, look for Virginia Tech to pull off the small upset at home. This game should be close, but depth, experience, and home court will win outin the end.
