Morocco vs Portugal Preview

Portugal (3-0-1) will square off against an undefeated Morocco team (3-1-0) on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET.

Portugal are looking to secure their second-ever top-four finish at the FIFA World Cup. This is the longest Morocco have lasted in the tournament, and they sit as +260 underdogs to advance against Portugal, who are favored at -350. The winner will play either France or England in the semi-final next Wednesday.

Morocco

Ranked at 22 in the FIFA World Rankings, Morocco upset a seventh-ranked Spain team on Tuesday, defeating them in penalties to advance past the round of 16 for the first time in team history. Goaltender Yassine Bounou allowed no goals in the shootout, stopping two of three penalties he faced. Bono now has two clean sheets on his resume, combing with one from backup Munir Mohand to tie England netminder Jordan Pickford for the tournament lead. Morocco remain undefeated but they have now played two scoreless draws in regulation, only converting four times in four games.

Portugal

Christiano Ronaldo was absent from the starting lineup after being substituted halfway through the previous match, a 2-1 loss to South Korea. The superstar striker was replaced by Goncalo Ramos, who scored a hat trick in a 6-1 route over Switzerland. The leading scorer in the history of international men’s soccer only has only one goal to his name thus far and is yet to score in elimination on Soccer’s biggest stage.

Midfielder Bruno Fernandez has been the key contributor to Portugal’s success, with two of their tournament-leading 12 goals. His tournament-leading third assist came on a corner kick to Pepe, making the 39-year-old the second-oldest goal scorer in World Cup history.
