Serbia vs. Switzerland Preview

Serbia (0-1-1) will take on Switzerland (1-0-1) for the first time since the previous World Cup group stage. A Switzerland win or draw depending on the other match would guarantee them qualification, while Serbia need to win to ensure they go on.

Serbia

Serbia is looking for revenge on Switzerland after a 2-1 loss in 2018 that ultimately determined which team would advance past the group stage. They have failed to make the round of 16 since 1998, but the country has two fourth-place finishes to their name, which is longer than Switzerland has ever lasted in the tournament.

The team is ranked 22nd overall according to FIFA Men’s World Rankings and is coming off a 3-3 draw to a 43rd-ranked Cameroon team after opening with a 2-0 loss to the tournament favorite Brazil. They held Brazil scoreless in the first half but failed to get a shot on target in the second, and were outshot 22-5 in the match. Defenseman Nikola Milenkovic had eight tackles (five won), and goaltender Vanja Milinkovic-Savic made six saves.

Against Cameroon, the shots were much more even, but Serbia still trailed 8-5 in shots on goal. Andrija Zivkovic had two assists, while Sergej Milinkovic-Savic helped his brother out in the net, giving his country their first tournament lead.

Switzerland

The 15th-ranked Swiss led off the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Cameron in a game they easily could have lost had it not been for goalkeeper Yann Sommer who made five stops in a game they were outshot eight (five on target) to seven (three on target). Striker Breel Embolo netted his team’s first and only goal of the tournament to open the second half.

Brazil has yet to allow a shot on target, converting once on five shots on net to defeat Switzerland 1-0. If they can stay undefeated, a draw will be good enough to qualify the Swiss for the Round of 16 for a third consecutive World Cup.

Betting Outlook

Despite being ranked seven spots lower by FIFA, Serbia (+155) is a slight favorite over Switzerland (+180), with the odds to draw set at +220. Their previous match in the 2018 World Cup was the first and only meeting between the two countries. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
