    French Open Futures

I am playing Almagro +5000 and Melzer +12500. Think the value on these guys is amazing...Almagro, in my mind, should be the 2nd favorite. If by chance Nadal's injury is more serious than we think then what a steal we have got

According to ESPN, Nadal should be ready for Spain's Davis Cup matches in March so I don't think the injury will be a big deal at all.

Making futures plays this early on a tournament in May is silly.

I see on ESPN that Rafa will be sidelined for 10 days. Is it just me, or does that seem insanely short for a muscle tear, even the most minor of ones?

In the end, I agree with Phan. Too early in an individual sport to be making future plays.

I agree with the Almagro prediction and can see him easily getting to the semi's if he has a good draw. I think Almagro will win 2 majors before he retires and I think they'll both be at the French. Although this might be too early. Almagro was pretty much Rafa's only real challenge in last years French.

it really all depends on the draw though so we need to wait for that to come out

    French Open Futures

I don't play these very often but thought I'd give it a go after seeing the price I could get on Melzer.

    I put $20 on him at +25000

and added another $30 a minute ago.

I'm not expecting him to win but I'm hoping to green out for a decent chunk at some point in the tournament. His form is back and he didn't crack against Fed despite having many opportunities to do so. Barring an injury I think he can make a decent run.

If you take any futures, add them in here as I may throw a bit on them as well.

Sorry, Melzer ain't winning it, and i don't think he's getting very far either. You just burned 50 $. Probably could have given it to a bum, and made his life a little more bearable.

Sportingbet Australia. The most they'll let you put on is $20 though so I had to get a little help

If you read my post you'll see I said I don't think he'll win it but I do think he'll go far enough to make me more profit than the $50 I spent. Same thing I did with Mannarino 2 months ago. As long as I make a decent chunk more than I outlaid I'm happy. Even a little bit more and it's still fun for me.

    Sorry

But honestly: this book had him at $251, the largest book in Australia has him at $51, some offshore ones have him at $100. Understand why I took him? This book hasn't moved yet after the match whereas others have.

Thanks Sinner. And you're right - he looked excellent today whereas most people would've crumbled. Despite what many think, Fed is actually a great clay player. Not Nadal great obviously but much better than the casual observer thinks.

I'm trying to take a clue from you and start picking off bad lines where I can. This was a very, very bad one and hopefully I can make some cash off of it.

Best of luck Shari on your future play, I haven't even had a chance to look into the French yet, should be some good tennis upcoming.

    Thanks icer

I actually have to thank beefcake for this one. I was looking at the odds during the match and then just kind of forgot about them until he came in my thread and said Melzer was 100-1 to win. After looking at another site that had him at 51 after the match, I jumped on the 251. He's not going to win but he's a good chance at letting me green out.

I only started the thread to keep track of everyone's futures plays because I like to have a bit of a gamble during Slams but usually I'm so dense I wait until after the first round or whatever and miss a lot of the value.

Fair enough Acer. I hope you're wrong obviously and after what I've seen from him this week I have a feeling you are (again barring any injuries) but if nothing else it'll give me someone to cheer for. I've never had the chance to bet such an off line in tennis before - at least not with someone of his calibre so I'll just have fun with my $50 win or lose. If you bet any futures, come in here and let me know!

Guess it's not bad to get it and hedge, but Melzer was an absolute wreck before this week. From a price standpoint, you certainly got it good.

Yeah I'll definitely be hedging at some point so I'll need your help to figure out the best time to do it.

I just couldn't pass up 251 when the discrepancy was so big with other books. Not on a player like Melzer, even with him coming back from injury.

And for what it's worth, he's now down to $51 at Sportingbet!

Fed did not even care today, he also knew he could not win this tourney, he also is not a great clay man

Do not go by this win by Meltzer and think he is great

    JJ ARE YOU SERIOUS???

Did you watch the bloody match?? Fed was fighting on every point. He cared - this is a fricken Masters tournament worth 600 points. If he's not going to care about this, he wouldn't bother with any of the lower tournaments. He doesn't need the practice.

I took a futures bet that has now dropped $200 in price. Don't call me a friggin square in this case you arsehole.

And he's not good on clay??

    He's 154-41 on the surface. 79%

40-10 his last 50 matches. You know who those losses came to?? Melzer today, Soderling at the French, Montanes at Estoril, Gulbis when he started his slump last year, Djoko, Wawrinka, Nadal, Nadal, Nadal, Nadal.

You're out of your mind dude. You need to start watching smaller tournaments instead of just tuning in at the Semi stage of Slams.

Shari fed has never been comfortable on clay even though he has had some success.

Fed is older and lacks the real speed on the ball, he plays not to lose a lot.

Also meltzer played very well and a guy like him cannot do it on a regular basis.

    Now stop being a square.

Federer does not start well on clay in his first tournament any more, but it's all about building confidence into Roland Garros. It's not like he lost to a complete jobber or something. Melzer is good when healthy.

I don't need Melzer to "do it" on a regular basis. Last year at the French he lost to Nadal in the semis after beating Djokovic. I have a bit of faith that he'll at least get past the first round and I can green out this bet.

Do you understand I got him at $251 an hour before they dropped him to $51??? Seriously you're a schmuck sometimes.
