Fess up SBR - who made this bet?!

From the Jan 4 edition of the Herald Sun (newspaper here in Melbourne):

"Australian wildcard Sophie Ferguson bowed out in the first round, beaten 6-4 6-2 by second seed Shahar Peer.

The result was a nice little earner for one punter, with a CentreBet client placing $1 million on the Israeli to win at $1.08 for a profit of $80,000."

Yep. They even have a UK specific site. William Hill tried to buy them out for $130 million back in May and Ladbrokes was in the running too but I'm not sure if a sale ever went through.

    Talk about a terrible bet.

    They can consider themselves lucky.

Ferguson isn't even that bad a player.

shari, don't you know tennis gets no action?

The bet was probably really for like 90 cents.

Holy crap! What kind of limits have you on American sports? NFL, college football, NBA, etc?

if someone has a 1.000 dollar bankroll and bets 10 on a tennis match at 1.08 odds, you wouldnt think that was crazy right?

maybe the guy has like a 100.000.000 bankroll

lol imagine if he lost and he was chasing on the next game, he'd be on tilt betting the title to his house, his car, maybe even his wife's kidney and his daughters ipod

I reckon Centrebet would have loved taking that wager. Try getting a mill down on something that is remotely close to EV long term and its not going to happen.

Yep, I agree. You'd probably make a bet or maybe two and it'd be over for you. But still, if you've got inside knowledge about a match (which is easier to achieve in tennis than most any other sport) or you feel there's a definite mismatch between two players, I figure hitting them once or twice for a nice chunk of money would be worth the inevitable banning or at the very least limits that will come your way. Definite ballsy move on this person's part though as it's not like this was Serena against my grandmother.

Well it was tacked on in the middle of a tennis article in the sports section, kind of like they do with big horse bets. I know they, Sportingbet and the TAB take big bets so I'm assuming it's real since it's not like Centrebet was trying to advertise it or it was on the front page. Page 54 buried amongst a big article.
And when you think about it, they let Fev have a couple hundred k in credit even after he told them he'd have trouble paying it back. We never hear about the massive losing bets so I'm thinking they're willing to take the hit on this because anyone silly enough to place such a dumbass bet in tennis will surely lose a big one at some point. A million to win 80k sounds unreal but how many others have lost? Just one of those losing bets would cover more than 9 times of the winnings here.

Can't edit on here but I should've said one loss would cover more than 12 times the winnings. Damn iPhone and your no scroll shit.

Sorry J, somehow I missed this before. Basically someone put a million dollar wager on a chick at $1.08 against an Australian playing in Australia. They ended up winning the $80k but in my opinion, albeit as someone who would never have the opportunity or desire to make a wager of this size, it was a silly bet. These two weren't THAT far apart to warrant odds like that, let alone a bet like that. That's the beauty of tennis and why I rarely post bets less than +100 - people are made big favourites for ridiculous reasons and the odds are screwed. Once in awhile they will but even then, to bet even $10k on a $1.08 favourite is beyond ballsy. However the person won so as long as they take their $80k, thank their lucky stars and run for the hills, that's all that matters.

Yep. I guess that's the great thing about being a Government regulated book. They can afford to take this hit and pay out because they know they'll get it back fairly quickly. Still blew my mind when I read it though.

Yisman, the more I read that thread now the funnier it becomes. That's also the first time I realised that JJ had fukked some of my accounts. All documented for SBR, along with Fishhead laughing because no book would ever take a $30k Nascar bet. If only he knew the perks of traveling outside of the US or at least being creative with FishheadWagering.com.

As long as my accounts here are open, you'll both always have access to Aussie books. To not figure out a way to play at them, especially with the 100% guarantee of payout (and in our case here it's by midnight to our bank account if you request it by 2pm that day) is a shame.

I dunno if it's such an obvious losing proposition long term. You often see a million or more pop up on offer at sub $1.10 in the closing minutes of soccer matches on Betfair.

Looks like it could be a very profitable activity from the outside.

I realize that's not like plonking a mill on a full tennis match though.

And if they take a huugge hit, it becomes a tax write off against future earnings anyway, so they can't really lose even when they lose, long term. What a great business!
