Australian open tennis likely to be delayed

Players can't handle the pollution caused by the Bush fires

I’m telling you it’s like there’s an apocalypse happening. Not all of Australia but certain parts , including Melbourne sadly. You walk out of your house and it’s like you’ve binged on Marlboro Reds for 18 hours straight. People walking around with those little masks you see everyone wearing in Japan and we saw someone wearing a full on gas mask as he was driving yesterday.

We go from drought to massive pollen and hay fever to bushfires (still going with 30 people dead and over a billion wildlife lost) to now smoke so thick that NASA’s posting pics of it online. Bloody relentless mess here. If I were a player I’d tell the AO to shove it up their arses right now.

I hear as soon as it rains hard we are likely to have floods and wash away a lot of top soil now too. Something to do with the dry cracked earth and lack of vegetation combining to prevent water seeping back into soil fast enough initially. :\

It's still kind of an orange hue to the light up here in Sydney but the smoke is not choking for the last 2 weeks now. 5 or 6 weeks of what you have now before that though. Every building and anything outside is filthy and has a thick coat of ash and dust.

Crazy guys, stay safe. We get that in California, but not going to pretend like I know what it's like where you are now.

Much love to you two and I hope things haven't hit too close to home, or any closer than they have to.

Too many people and animals with real problems for us city slickers to be complaining much about the smoke from their burning homes really :\

Heaps of Cali and Canadian fire fighters out here now after already dealing with the killer season up there this year too.

Maybe, but impossible to calculate against the number. Hence the edge joke.

More of a spot play thing I suppose.

I think it will be ok, it's really the first 2 rounds that u have to worry about as they have good air con indoor courts and once 4th round onwards it's practically all show courts, if the first 2 days are ok I think it should be fine as the rain forecast will help on the weekend plus monday

Yeah can't see how they can continue today, I reckon no tennis for rest of day unless those matches played show courts

Yeah but I dunno how the rules work as I think they were playing on the outside courts, if this was during a.o they would move it to the show courts (indoor), it just stopped raining but that was heavy rain, do they play qualifiers during the night? Because if they don't then the matches will be called off until tomorrow

Why people live there with all the stuff that happens there, god bless them. My friend just moved to Melbourne and loves it but says the fires are really putting a damper on things. It’s like Florida. From the swampy weather to hurricanes get the fukk away from these places. Heard Toronto and Vancouver are the play.

Weren't their ancestors shipped there, against their will, to serve sentences to the Crown, for petty crimes?

I mean really...what Australian people have made of their country in basically 3 generations is amazing and a tribute to the human spirit.
