Will Bodog bust hurt US players using other books?
I have used this site a lot but never felt like creating an account but after reading about what is happening at BoDog I got a little nervous. I did use them but don't anymore but really don't know how safe my money is now that this whole BoDog bust has gone down. My current book pays very fast and is great but what are the chances that the Feds try and bring down all books that cater to Americans or is BoDog just being used to set an example and scare the industry.
First off, Welcome to the SBR forum sir.
I feel the players will be paid by Bodog, however they are having some serious processing issues at this time. My advice would be to stick with books like 5Dimes and BetJamaica these days, because they seem to have the most reliable processing solutions.
As far as the shutting out U.S. players goes, that is the 64,000 question. Because nobody knows what the U.S. government has in mind to stop online gambling. From the looks of it these days is they are targeting the banking establishments, but that all can change if they find a better way to attack the situation.

BoDog will not have any effect on the top books.
The U.S. government stole Bodog's money.
Not just Bodog's money apparently. The processor's money got seized, which I've heard processed for more than just Bodog, including some poker sites, which makes the 24 million from Bodog claim a bit exaggerated.

YES the processors and banks is what scares me!
Think of this hypothical situation. Lets say I have 10000 in a bank account and lets say 5000 was from checks from processors. Then lets say the Feds say that money is from illegal off shore gambling and decide to take the money from the bank. The bank in turn then takes the money from me months after the transaction because that money was seized by the Feds.
That is scary and that is what I'm worried about. One day it might eventually progress to this. The government will never start jailing online gamblers but the threat of hitting players in their pocket WOULD END U.S. ONLINE GAMBLING.

Translation - Probably on the brink of collapse under the weight of federal indictments.

I dont see BD going under but they sure have a noticable limp right now. If a CRIS was to be taken down it would make things difficult. But a Bodog is an island type of operation. Its not connected to the industry. It would not have a dominoe effect that a CRIS or a Greek would have.
It's 2008, all this money moving electronically is so easily traceable. When the Feds break up a book of course they look at the records. If they really wanted to be pricks they could also go after the gamblers for taxes. Together the taxes owed by the illegal offshore U.S gamblers could well be worth tens of millions of dollars. If your making a substantial amount of money from gambling offshore, probably wise to start reporting it as regular income on an annual basis.
Also keep mind that ** has been willingly turning over records to the feds for over 40 years now. The digital age could end up making it impossible to move money to books.
Are things much better in Canada?
Matter of fact, I would feel a lot better if we went to a system of mailing cash. Request a payout from a book, receive an envelope of cash via certified mail....and post up the same way. Might be a little cumbersome...but think of how much money land based casino's handle, it could be done...
Then you have no record, no paper trail, no electronic footprint, no payment processors getting busted. The federal government could send us online bamblers back to the stone age if they wanted.....
