Is that normal action from 5dimes?

I requested a book-to-book transfer from 5dimes to pinnacle and at that point the 5dimes customer service asked me to give them my password at their site. Is it safe if i just type it on a live chat session? Doesn't seem right to me.

Completely standard. For anything on live chat for 5dimes you have to confirm your account # and password...

Of course. Otherwise, anyone could get your acct. # and go on live chat to ask for a transfer to another account.

Why would they have his account number?

If someone's gonna steal your account # then they would also steal your password.
