William Hill (NJ) - Suspended Account/Seizing Funds Illegally

    So here’s the story.....

Me and the wife we’re on a mini vacation in AC the last few days. We had tickets for the MMA PFL fights at Ocean Resort last night.

Before the fights last night I tried to log into my William Hill app figuring I’d load my account and bet the fights throughout the night. I had forgotten my password (haven’t used since March). I hit the reset my password link and it sends me an email to confirm. I click on the link in the email but it does not work. I call WH customer service and they say it’s a known problem when using iPhones and there’s no fix other than using another device. They are unable to help me.

So at this point, I have my wife open an account and I will use her account to put bets in. She uses the promo code to get the free $50 after placing $50 in bets. She goes to window at sportsbook and makes a deposit (they request identification). Account is now loaded and we go into fights. On her phone I make several wagers throughout the night all between $20-$100. We net -$20 for the night. Halfway through the night her battery was low so I started using my phone instead.

Fast forward to this morning. I go to log in and it says incorrect account number/password. I know I was typing correctly. My wife calls and they inform her that the account is suspended and is under review for fraud! We are like WTF??? They said she cannot make any withdrawals until investigation is complete (up to 7 days). She argues we are leaving NJ and heading back to NY and they shouldn’t be holding her funds. They explain there’s nothing they can do until investigation is over and if we’re in NY when we request a withdrawal, we can only get their debit card.

I would also like to point out that the bonus was never received (don’t even care about it really). Just want my funds released.

I strongly believe WH is illegally holding my funds. I did not break any of their rules. I don’t see any rules on their site that says two people from same household can’t have an account.

    Fukk William Hill!!!

Good thing I had gas and toll money to get home

It sounds like they have reason to check out whats going on there.

But in order to withhold any money they will need to cite a specific term they claim you breached.

If they do not do that, an email to NJ Dept of Gaming Enforcement should help Igaming@njdge.org

Thye do have a term that talks about one bonus per household

"3.1 Unless otherwise indicated in the Promotion Communication, participation in each Promotion is open to players from any of Our Platforms but is limited to one per person, family, household, address or organization to whom We send the Promotion Communication."

It's kind of weirdly only talked about in relation to promotional communication though.

    https://help.us.williamhill.com/en-u...and-conditions

It's a pretty normal rule though. They will also probably have a rule in there somewhere saying you can't place bets on behalf of others or let others use your account.

Still, they should refund your money, but maybe close your wife's account, if you just explain like you have here.

WillHill also have a second opinion team you can go direct to it normal support dont solve your problem: complaints@nj.williamhill.us

Sounds like a fairly standard audit/investigation with the device sharing especially if more than one bonus had been claimed. Keep us posted on the result.

I totally understand not receiving the bonus. Just threw the code in for the hell of it. I figured using two devices sent up a red flag on their end. But identification was required when she made the deposit at the book so they have to know the account is legit at this point.

I didn’t see the bonus rule when I did a quick scan on my phone. Opti has found it though. Wasn’t trying to scam them at all. Just wanted to place some wagers. There’s no reason they should be holding money as nothing was done illegally. Just placed normal bets.

No doubt they will eventually release the funds. Just sucks I have to wait now and I’ll get it on a stupid debit card.

Being the gambling veteran he is big Joe should know the same account household bonus rules. He should be glad it's not offshore because he would have zero shot at seeing his money back

I remember way back even before Jersey was setting up talking about consumer protections being added as really the only Gov't regulatory injection.

    This could be an example.

Why is that? They didn’t issue a bonus. We have plenty of gambling accounts where both accounts were issued a bonus. In most of those cases, it was indeed bonus whoreing. Not the case here.

She didn’t open the account for the bonus. If they had any kind of customer service they could have issued a password for me and I would have just used my account.

Yup, rules clearly state one bonus per household. I looked at the wrong place. I was looking under the WH50 rules. If I saw this I would never put the bonus code in.

Still no reason for them to hold money. We never received the bonus and used our own funds.

Go to a ticket writer, give them the account number and ID and ask for the money, expecting to get it. Anything other than getting paid, say "You have no problem taking money, but when it comes time to payout you refuse?" Make someone answer. Write down the name of every person you talk to, as well as exactly what they say. I won't talk to anyone on the phone just to make it harder for them. There are times it has been a hassle, but I've always gotten my money in NV. If you still can't get your money say "I dispute your decision". In NV, they have to contact gaming commission for any dispute over a certain amount; failing to do that and they are liable to be fined. Then contact gaming commission yourself. East coast states seem to just be making up rules as they go along -- we'll see if players let them. I would send emails to everyone in the state legislature including every detail about a sportsbook taking bets, but not paying out. May as well file a police report, too.

Good ideas but I’m already back in NY now.

On on a side note, people are assuming that it is the bonus issue. I don’t think it is. I just recalled that my oldest son (same name as me) used my address when he opened his account earlier in the year when we were at a Devils game. Neither of us had any problems receiving bonus/payout.

    Did I read that right?

It said you couldn't use your iPhone for whatever reasons William Hill gave you... some bug.

So you made an account on your wife's phone. Apparently it must be an android?

Her phone was going dead... so you got back on your iPhone and started making wagers?

How were you able to log in with your phone when you couldn't use your iPhone?

Again... if I misread something.. I apologize. Just trying to figure out what happened.

You can’t reset password on iPhone. They say they’ve known about the issue for a month now and can’t fix it yet. Unreal

    She also has iPhone.

I simply entered her account number and password on my phone to access the account.

Theres no rule saying you can’t use someone else’s device to place wagers.

This is what the issue is. There are conflicting cookies on your phone that WillyHilly security can see. Their algorithm picked it up and to the it looks like 2 accounts on 1 device. To further their suspicion they have probably matched the betting pattern to your actual account as your wife's account wouldnt hold much data for them to say it is a valid separate account.
