    Bitpay compliance department

I went to use my bitpay card and found out that they put a hold on my account.. I was told I have to email the compliance department my License, copy of my social security card(dont have it) and all my transactions from November on..I am not even sure how to get all that info. Anybody else get sent to the compliance department? What did they make you do? It seems like they are going to close my account but Im not sure if there are certain things I can say or ask so maybe they wont? I appreciate any advice . Thanks

Only department I ever spoke to was the security department. They just wanted to make sure the transactions were mine. They were really nice on the phone.... and everything was confirmed.

Sounds like they are trying to report your account to fincen, IRS, justice department, etc. I would likely not send in that information if you have a small balance left. Sounds like at a minimum you've triggered a SARS report. Which on its own isn't much but I've never heard of a company asking for SSN card. That would be a hard stop / red flag for me.

My concern now is how I am going to withdraw from sportsbooks.. I can use a different card to deposit bitcoin using skrill.. But when I want to get money out now its going to be difficult. Any other cards like this? whats my best bet getting money out now?

Weird that they ask your ssn when you already gave it when you became a member, also why are they asking your transactions all the way from November - do they have that info in their record? Unless they just want to verify if you are that person. I just find it peculiar.
Did you make any unusual activities for them to red flag you? Like withdrawing large amounts.

In all seriousness I left NY a couple of years ago because I was sick of shit like that and high taxes to boot.

Gemini works in NY if I remember correctly. Otherwise sign up for paxful and don’t advertise you are from New York. As long as you are selling bitcoins and it’s not huge amounts nobody will ever ask for an ID. You can get to PayPal then to your bank account instantly for minimal fees.

@pinoy.. I did get on a run awhile back ago.. I did send money to my wifes paypal using that card.. A pretty large sum over a few weeks ago.. The card was fine for a few months.. Sent another paypal to my wifes account last week and it went through fine.. Used it a couple times this week on skrill.. and it was fine. Went to use it last night using skrill and it was blocked..I am waiting on a response email from the compliance department.. So i guess I will see what they say.. They either want to know its me like you said or there is more to it.. I will keep you posted

They basically said they didnt like the paypal/skrill transactions. Paypal was used to send money to my wifes paypal. Skrill was used to fund my skrill account. Is what it is. Looking for a new card hopefully?? But I cant seem to find one for US citizens?

That blows. It’s not like PayPal or skrill were illegal. So they would rather you withdraw your money from their atm versus transferring it? They should’ve explained that to you and give you another chance instead of closing your account.

I am guessing they have flagged regularly moving money from one money transfer system in to another one is a way to launder money.

If you're buying a MO from Walmart or your local grocery store, it's hard for them to know that because it shows the merchant, not what was being bought.

isnt there a item description or a numeric code that it’s not an item bought but a MO? I would think financial institutions are more sophisticated technology-wise picking stuff up like this.

Well it was just my guess. But yes, moving money from Paypal to Skrill to Ecopayz is one way people try to wash money.

A *********** is more similar to cashing out.

And I didn't say a MO was "okay" btw. I really don't know how they are viewed by financial institutions. I do know how moving money from one ewallet to another is viewed though.

All it shows on my receipt is a debit card transaction with PIN verification.

I would believe there would be major privacy issues if the merchant is sharing what is being bought specifically. That doesn't mean the merchant itself might not be categorized where you have a good idea what is being bought there (i.e Coinbase as money like or a liquor store being categorized as such rather than a convenience/grocery store) or if Walmart's money center used a separate register system that had it's own separate code, but I don't see that.

One example of this would be the readers inside Costco being categorized as a warehouse club, but if you pump gas there, the merchant code for the readers at the pump are categorized as a gas station.

^ you have a good point. However, I just think MO can be categorized as a cash item per se, probably not by bitpay, but by the financial institution if that makes any sense.

I read AMEX is more of an exception than the rule. Plus since Bluebird is a Walmart co-branded card, I'm sure it's easier for them to identify what you're buying at their store.
