Do You Think Fantasy Wagering Is Hurting Traditional Sportsbooks??

Are they taking a piece of the pot away or is it a different crowd?

Probably mostly a different crowd of $20-$100 players. But anyone that is interested in gambling is going to be already doing it and will add fantasy. If a person is successful at fantasy, they will probably want to try their hand at gambling.

It just adds to the pool I imagine. I see the positive of this as being that it is obviously gambling and is a major step toward legalization.

I would say Fantasy is getting about 20% of the sports wagering flow. That's still pretty significant. And that percentage might even start increasing more and more.

How the hell could you do fantasy and sports wagering at the same time... without screwing your thought process up.... and have time just to live normal life??? There's no possible way. They are both different to cap.

You might see sportsbooks running some sort of fantasy software soon... to compete with Draft Kings etc. They better.

There's no doubt that it is. Usually football comes around and there's some nice bonuses that come on the market. This year nothing great even from the bonus books. Bookmaker reload was 50% instead of usual too. So yes it's having an effect.

At the Fantasy Expo is Miami last month, they presented some research from Eilers Research.

Some results of this research :
    - most users (42%) spent less than $100 USD a week on DFS.
    - 42% of players, used to play online poker for money.
    - 93.9% would still play DFS if Sportsbetting was legal.

Seems to me it's the poker sites that might be hurting more than sportsbooks.

In my opinion bettors make a judgement call that on average has a 50% chance.
DFS gives you the impression that you need to do homework before you can play.
The whole skill arguments re-enforces this feeling as well.

Also, playing against others you also need to keep track of what they did.
This means you cant just watch a game and know if you won.
So if I have 5 matchups, I need to constantly look online to see if I am winning or not on each of those.
Makes it a lot more complicated to simply enjoy in my humble opinion.

Supposedly there are about 40 million regular fantasy players out there (season long).
They estimate that there are about 3.9 million unique DFS players, for about 9% penetration.

Some people might say that is a nice start, but if you compare the pace of acceptation of DFS versus
some recent other online acceptations like facebook, twitter, instagram, whatsapp, etc
I dont think it's is going very fast. Specially considering all the advertisement that has been done
and the other referred acceptations had no advertisements.

Aside from that, they are still going to have to solve some problems with their business model:
    http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/J...sy-Sports.aspx

1.3 percent of players create 23 percent of all fee's and take 77% of all profits.
    Talk about sharks and fish.

My conclusion is that this industry is way over hyped and it will not bring what people think it will.

I thought it was a fad, until this crazy ad money draftkings and fanduel are spending. Also partnering with the leagues, and major investors like Disney, Comcast ect..Now starting to think they have the money to turn it into more than a fad.

Hope not, I think fantasy is gay. Breaking team sports down and betting only on how an individual preforms on THAT team, when his performance depends on his teammates play isn't team sports or sports betting, it's statistics dorks parlay lottery. It's turning team sports into geeks version of dungeons and dragons..grow a pair and bet on a game! If this really takes off teams will mean nothing, it will all be about prima donna star athletes as if it wasn't now.. Football linemen will be ignored even more than now, if that's possible.

Only joy I get from it is knowing the leagues supported the UIGEA in 2006 but got a carve out for fantasy thinking they could get royalties on the stats..but after the carve out the courts ruled they can't copyright player stats. Then the daily games came out which the leagues didn't see coming, turning fantasy as close to sports betting as you can get. So the leagues anti gambling lobbying backfired, that's satisfying.

    This.

I'll keep it short and sweet, fantasy sports is not hurting the books.
And for those who think DFS is going to flame out the way online poker did, think again.

    Is horse racing gay?
When you bet a horse race aren't you breaking down speed ratings and other data?
People need to realize it's an analytics world now, baseball isn't just about the counting stats, you know HR's RBI's,etc the ones that have an edge are the ones that use the analytics.

Can't score a run if you don't get on base, right?
So, why would one ignore a stat like OBA?

Fantasy sports is all about analytics, and in my opinion to be successful in betting a NFL game, one should apply that logic used in fantasy sports.

If team A allows the 27th most rushing yards in the NFL a game, and team B has the third most prolific rushing offense in the league, would you ignore that?

In NBA betting, if you had access to points per 100 possesions data, and PACE data, wouldn't you exploit that information in over/under total betting.

I play fantasy sports, I bet real games too, I am a math geek and a I/T operations analyst by trade, but I also played scholastic ball, and I was an amateaur scholastic wrestler.
I apply my geek math skills to the sports I played (pretty well back in the day I may add) to both my sports betting and my fantasy betting, I take pride in my geeknees,I make a good living being a geek.
I have a set a balls, if you were to cal me out as geek I'd thank you for the compliment, but I'm a lefty, you know what they say about lefties, you never see the first one coming, and my left jab leaves a bruise.

Horse racing isn't a team sport!!!!!!!!!!

But hey whatever floats your boat. I just really hated all the "homework" aka research for DF. Doing stacks in baseball is fun, and I was able to grind out a profit in NHL but to me not worth it.
Baseball is the ONLY sport I can see fantasy making sense, guy hits a homerun his teamates didn't hit it. You're betting on that hitter against that pitcher, RBI's skew the picture some but you can also stack which makes it closer to a team sport or sports betting. Football, when you pick a RB you're betting on the entire offense vs. the entire defense. The back doesn't get the yards without the blocking, and without the threat from the QB and WR for a pass. Also the workhorse back getting to the 5 yard line and then the FB or other RB vultures the TD well you got screwed out of points..
Hey it's just my opinion. And to be honest most of my bias is this shit is legal and sports betting is still offshore only. If it were the other way around I'd probably be defending daily fantasy, I'm basically pro freedom and hate the homework in fantasy verses the coin flip for sports betting.
I will say when i first started DF I got somewhat hooked, but eventually got bored and now strickly bet on games. Also the 10% vig sucks. But if you enjoy it more power to ya

I hear what you are saying, I'm totally into DFS because I love breaking down nunbers, I'm a geek like that.
Having said that, I'll play maybe 4 five dollar lineups in DFS a football weekend for a total of 20 dollars, but will make 2 or 3 100 dollar plus bets on a Saturday and 2 or 3 100 + bets on a Sunday on the 'real' games.

But... if you know your analytics, do your homework you can beat DFS, if you are a dart thrower you won't win money in fantasy, you have to put in the work, where in NFL betting a dart thrower can get lucky.

I read a story where a father went 17-2-1 ATS (playoffs incuded) in the NFL last season off of this one question.
The dad asked his 2 year old daughter "what team has the prettier helmet color"?If she said the gold helmets, the dad would call his local and bet the yellow helmets for 50 dollars. (LSU or whatever)

They do a great job promising big returns on tv and people are falling for it

They kind of promote it like the lottery

It is false dreams ..they are guys with very expensive software models that have a tremendous edge playing fantasy
