I'm dyin' to hear the judge explain why sports gambling in New Jersey is so harmful to the leagues but sports gambling in Nevada isn't.

He can't. But he was extremely well compensated for his ruling.

Then on what basis could it EVER be lawful or constitutional to let ANY state have it? These guys are human beings with logic and reason? What a fraud.

If monmouth started taking wagers and then courts ruled it was illegal every losing bet would have to be refunded if players requested it

Really happy George Bush senior protected us all when he sign this bill into law to protect these leagues. I wonder how much they had to pay for this horse shit scam.

Controversial U.S. Sports Gambling Law Turns 22 Years Old

    Comment Now Follow Comments

Today marks the twenty-second anniversary of President George H.W. Bush signing into law the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act — the very act cited by a U.S. District Court on Friday to prohibit the State of New Jersey from allowing sports gambling at its Monmouth County racetrack.
The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (“PASPA”) was drafted at the behest of America’s five premier sports leagues, which feared that if states legalized sports gambling within their borders, it would hurt leagues’ bottom lines.
League counsel fought hard for this act to both Congress and the media.
In June 1991, NFL vice president and league counsel Jay Moyer told USA Today that he had come to view sports gambling as being ”like a cancer” because he believed it “would diminish the significance of sport.” In that same article, Gary Bettman, who was then the Vice President of the National Basketball Association, stated his belief that “[i]f there [were ever] widespread legal gambling, [the NBA would] be less popular because the environment of the game will change.”
The original version of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act had proposed to ban sports gambling in all states. But this proposal received strong rebuke from four states that already allowed the practice: Delaware, Montana, Oregon, Nevada. Ultimately, lobbyists for these states persuaded lawmakers to change the proposed bill to include a grandfather clause that allowed for sports gambling to continue where ”such scheme was authorized by a statute as in effect on October 2, 1991; and … was conducted in that State or other governmental entity at any time during the period beginning September 1, 1989, and ending October 2, 1991.”
Nevertheless, this compromise solution did not allow for any additional states to legalize sports gambling after the act went into effect – a move that the State of New Jersey, among potentially others, has come to strongly regret.
To some, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act is seen to no longer serve its initial purpose, especially as professional sports teams such as the Orlando Magic, Brooklyn Nets and New England Patriots have forged relationships with daily fantasy sports host sites, allowing these teams to profit from certain forms of play-for-cash fantasy sports gaming. Major League Baseball also seems to profit directly nowadays for online sports gaming through a sponsorship arrangement with one of the daily fantasy sports games.
Nonetheless, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act remains federal law. This means that both private parties and state governments needs to tread carefully when venturing in the realm of hosting sports contests that involve entry fees and prizes for predicting game results correctly.

they aint worried about that. That is the smoke screen they throw out front. They fix games like last night with Romo and get a big cut. NJ doesn't understand this and thinks this shit is all on the up and up and can't figure out why these leagues want to extort money out of them. As soon as NJ pony's up they will be able to take bets. You guys all seen Romo miraculously get healthy and get back in that game? He had to or Weedon might have screwed up the plan and covered for Dallas. Poor Romo had to play hurt to do his part last night.
