5dimes support chat asking password. weird.

    It was strange.

I tired to deposit to 5dimes, didn't go through. (guy said processor issue? not exactly sure what the problem is yet)
Anyway, I entered chat to find out why.
The service guy at the chat asked me for my id and password!! saying he needs to verify that i'm the account holder.

I have never seen anything like this on any websites that ask password right up front..especially, in this case, over the chat!! Websites usually make people to change the password instead of find out and tell them what the old password was in the event of forgotten password, because they are not supposed to know the original password word by word.
Sure, the chat room was over https, but at least the guy at the chat saw my password not encrypted!!
Websites encrypts passwords before they store in database, so that no one can easily know it, yet these guys just ask it over the chat?
Makes me wonder they even save the encrypted password in the database. Or does this customer service guy logs into my account to see if this password works?

I briefly complained to him that that they should change this protocol, didn't get any answer.

Is this common experience? or was this just this guy didn't know what he was doing?
    any thoughts?

Yes its common. Almost all live chats Ive been in at various sites ask to verify your user name/ log in id as well as your password.

DSI/Bookmaker won't even answer general questions without receiving your password first.

When I said I have a general question, why do you need my id/password, they said no info, no answer. It would seem correct to ask if it was an account specific question, but they don't agree.

well...it's a bad protocol, security wise.
people share same passwords on many sites...
and people working behind the chat room, they can quit or move to other job any day...

The sportsbook industry is different. It surprised me at first too. Books do NOT encrypt your password (at least in my experience 5dimes and Heritage don't), and you MUST give your password to any CS agent, online or over the phone, to do anything.

Don't worry about it, it's the standard here. Use a different password on every site (you can't bash a website's password security if you don't follow one of the most basic rules) and remember that others can see it.

In fact, it's even in 5dimes's rules (no I am not going to go find it) that all CS agents can see your password and will ask it every time and not to use any offensive language in a password. So you were warned.

    Its laughable really.

If I have to give up my password to some random support agent the second I get off support the first thing I do is to change it to another lengthy random sequence of characters. I cant affect how they store it, or who has access to it, but I sure as shit am going to do what I can on my end.

It sucks that US citizens are subjected to having to deal with bubble gum bookies, slow payments, and all this general bullshit. The entire rest of the world doesn't have these problems. Land of the free; home of the braves. Yup.

because I live in the US. risk/reward makes offshore gambling to me now useless. this was one of the reasons-a lack of security-giving these idiots all my vital information and them not protecting it. mostly just not worth the risk and of course money moves way too slow at a high price to someone. these days you have to be way better than an average gambler with great money management and then lucky enough to get your winnings home.

With the number of times email address lists have been stolen by former employees I'm surprised account numbers and passwords haven't been stolen and leaked from the books that require it to chat. It is just a matter of time before it happens. It will create a huge headache for all involved when this hits the fan.
Here is an idea , keep the account passwords private and create 4 or 6 digit pins to chat.

They ask for passwords because they want to make sure you're not a dumba$$ Fed or a rat, or someone trying to bust them from the U.S. Since Feds will have a harder time trying to infiltrate an outfit by asking questions about their processor, banking, customer service, etc..

It's a smart move and I commend the books for doing this..

It's stupid too because you need the password to log on to the site so even if you're someone who hacked an account it means you already know the password. I don't get why the chat reps need to ask the password. Makes ZERO sense.

The Feds can set up an account in 2 minutes, just like anyone else can. It doesn't require a deposit.
And then they can get all their questions answered.

    There's plenty to worry about.

    Because the following is correct:

    from_Innisfree - "well...it's a bad protocol, security wise.

and people working behind the chat room, they can quit or move to other job any day...".

5 Dimes and many others don't even bother to use https.

Hey, why should they care if you get hacked - it's not their money.

Scary. I'll never play at a site that requires me to state my password on chat. Even the online games I play have a warning 'moderators will never ask for your password!'.

    Sheesh.

Do you believe that every teller at your bank can access your online banking password?

Or do you believe that it is possible for the banks - and any other business which wishes to - to construct the system so that passwords cannot be accessed by everyone?
