Question about disputed wager? what would you do?

Ok, this is the situation. I called in a wager and decided not to place it by hanging up before the wager could be read back and confirmed to me, and before i would confirm with my account and password. I assumed that this play would not go through but then i checked my account like 1 hour later and it was actually posted to my account. I told them to listen to the recorded call and could clearly hear in the call that i was not intending to place that wager since the call ended before anything could be read back and before i could confirm with my account and password.

Then, the sportsbook took there time in giving me an answer and finally they graded it after the game was already over, and obviously i was a loser on the wager. I would be curious to know what they would have done if it was a winner, they obviously would have cancelled the wager in my opinion.

Any advice. Am I supposed to learn from my own mistakes, or should I ask SBR to step in and help me out for this 100 dollar wager?

the reason i assumed the wager would not be placed is because i was in this exact situation before when a call got disconnected and the wager never went through, so there is inconsistency with this book. of course its smarter to call back to be on the safe side, and i have definitely learned my lesson from now on.

The person you were speaking with obviously knew they shouldn't have posted that to your account. I mean use common sense, if they hung up before you were able to confirm anything, why would they post it? For all they know the call got dropped or something of that nature. So yes, I would get some help and fight for my $100 if that happened to me.

because my girlfriend walked in and you know how it is..with gambling...ya it wasn't a good call on my end..but was it still fair to let the wager go through after the games result was known?

The book likely shouldn't have given you the bet, but sometimes they do it as a convenience since they know you wanted the play, but just got cut off. That said, I think it is reasonable that if you didn't confirm the play, you don't have the play. So fill out the complaint form, and we will look into it.

Your reason for hanging up rings true for me too. I was in a high school, making a bet when i was younger and an assistant principle walked up behind me as I was about to confirm. I just bailed and had no action on it. Winner of course.

you have a case. I don't think they waited to see what the outcome was. Go online and look at the timestamp of the wager.

the only issue i have with filing a complaint is will this book screw me over then? will i have to go with another book after this complaint? i was hoping that they would give me the money on their own, without me having to file a complaint.

i guess what i meant to say is i will be uneasy with placing future bets with this book since they will now label me as a complainer and for them it means trouble.

I think it's a fair complaint and it wouldn't be good form to treat someone badly in the future based upon a previous legitimate complaint. You'd confirm an online bet and in my limited experience of betting over the phone in the past, the bet has only been accepted if I confirm it.

On the other point raised, I now exclusively deal with gambling matters online in privacy because of the very problems you've talked about when trying to use the phone. I appreciate this isn't possible for everyone to do though and can understand exactly why you couldn't complete the call.

Rick if I were you I would offer to split the bet. Based on your story, it sounds like they did it because they could have assumed your phone cut out but you still wanted the bet. Did you call back within a few minutes and say that the bet wasnt valid? I am going to assume no and say that I honestly would be happy if the book did that and my phone died or something. You DID want the bet, that was your original intent BEFORE the girlfriend went to walk in the room. I honestly wouldnt raise a stink about it, if it would have won they would have paid you.

Your best bet is to talk to the book first. Ask to speak to a manager, and review the recording. Do they agree there was no readback? If you do this with them first, most books won't hold it against you. If you come to us, there's a good change we can get the $100 back, but the book may resent you for it.

You called back when the wager was still live? At what point in the event?

well this is what happened Bill. i assumed that the wager would not have been placed since i hung up before they could give me a read back and before i could confirm with my account and password. i had the same thing happen to me before when a call got disconnected and that wager was not placed, so i assumed that this would be a cancelled wager as well. i then from that point on assumed that the wager would not have been placed unless i called back to confirm. i wasn't in a position to call back since my girlfriend doesn't know so much about my gambling. i went online later, about an hour into the game to place some more action when i saw that the wager that i thought was for sure not on the board, actually was. i would have called sooner but the reason i didn't is i didn't even know the play was on the board. i called as soon as i saw the game was on my account and told them to cancel it right away. they took more than 2 hours to get back to me. i called them again about 2 hours into the game. they still had no answer. they didn't give me the answer until the game was over and i was so conveniently graded a loser.

so sorry to go on so long. i called them once at about one hour into the event. maybe early 2nd quarter. i called them a second time in late 3rd quarter to tell them they better give me an answer because they have already had close to one and a half hours to resolve the call and still no answer. and then i called after the game and they said now we can give you the result, and it was obviously too late by then. the fact is that i only wagered 110 dollars on this bet. i have wagered a few thousand dollars with these guys before and i am a very good member there. this is my first ever dispute and i have been with them for almost 2 years. never had any issues until now.

Rick... After you have posted this I would be comfortable with saying it sounds like the book was shot taking at this point. What was the score of the game at the time you called? I think that is an important fact as well. If you called in and your side was getting crushed then I could see where the book is coming from. But if you called in AND your team was winning, the bet should be cancelled. They also should not take that long to give an answer if they are going to make it no action or not. That is not fair to the player IMO. I guess you learned your lesson though right?

i believe that the score was 7-3 or something when i called in, which was only through the first quarter and a bit of the second quarter..i didnt see the game live so i just checked the ticker quickly. so the book might have thought that i was waiting to see how the game turned out, but this was never the case. it is lucky that i called in at all, only because i was going to place some more action on other games, but they don't see it that way. i would think they would give me the benefit of the doubt since they have made big money off of me and i am a great player to have on board, but i guess its time to find a new book.

I would go to someone higher up and at least ask for them to meet you in the middle and ask for a $50 free play or something like that. It is definitely a questionable move, I would not go as far as filing a dispute though. If you are happy with them OVERALL besides this minor bump, then fukk it.

I spoke to a manager, probably the third different manager and they listened to where i was coming from. they credited me back the entire $110 dollars and said next time to call back and confirm your wagers. I said FOR SURE and I HAVE LEARNED MY LESSON. Thanks everyone for listening and feedback!!

Was it because if you won you would have been happy as can be but since you lost you now have a reason to "dispute"???

Definitely better to try and exhaust all avenues with them directly... Can you say what book this was? As a possible customer, I like how they handled the situation...
