A democratic administration wants to stop a Republican governor from his state having sports betting. You dumfuks that voted for Obama are clearly stupid suckers.

Brock, did you really expect the federal government to not step into a case where a federal statute was being questioned? Listen, this case will eventually makes it way to the Supreme court if the states can't get that appropriate decision in a district court. At the end of the day what Nevada has right now is the definition of a monopoly. Its basically like saying peaches can only be grown in Georgia and no other state. It is the most unconstitutional statute that there is. How can one state be granted a certain revenue stream that other states can't also legally be entitled to? The only reason this has not been questioned earlier is because no other state has fought as hard as NJ is right now. I have full confidence that with Christie's backing this will eventually get done sooner then later in the states favor.

Anybody who thought sports betting was going to be made legal is an idiot. Did you people really think that the people who set this whole system up were going to allow something they did not want? Its the same dam thing as when the cop shoots a unarmed suspect straight in the back with 50 eye witnesses and several videos, yet gets off scott free or at a max just a minimal jail sentence or a small fine. The whole thing is rigged more than the NFL, NBA or online poker.

You guys really need to open up your eyes. First off the gaming industry worldwide is a $400 billion business. Are you telling me that the casino operators in Las Vegas would not want to increase there revenues by providing sports betting to all 50 states? With online gaming in the developments of being put to work the opportunity to sit at home and log onto "casears.com" to place a bet is imminent. The federal government did not evolutionize the leagues to where they made the super bowl the most watched sporting event because everyone has a bet on it. The rise of illegal bookmaking made the NFL what it is today. The federal government just agreed to a statue that limited the exposure of wagering, but it was done in a time where no one really cared. NJ did not question the act in 1992 because back then with Atlantic City thriving it wasn't worth there time, however times have changed and to spite if they challenged the law then or now the fact that the law is not constitutional remains the same.

I do think it's a matter of time when this will be legal nationwide in the future because of revenue issues with the government. They just need to find a way to tax it that's all.

Eric Holder was one of the top legal reps. for the NFL in his Covington & Burling days, so it's no surprise they would join in, but that's not a big deal. The DOJ is as corrupt as they come, and Holder is a disgrace, and if it gets to a fair and legitimate court, NJ will win, because the 1992 act is blatantly unconstitutional. However, the NFL is so powerful, that it might not get a fair court, and a total disregard for the constitution has been rampant in the last 2 administrations, so who knows?

If this gets a fair hearing in a legitimate court, the NFL and the leagues will get killed, and everyone knows it, including them. The real contest is if can get heard in the Supreme Court, which should insure a NJ victory. Going to be pretty hard to convince 5 justices of the Supreme Court that legal sports wagering in NJ will decimate the leagues, while being legal in Nevada hasn't in the last 40 years. Also pretty hard to convince any court that even with every newspaper in the country publishing point spreads, along with ESPN and everywhere else that suddenly legal betting in New Jersey will all of a sudden make the viewing public skeptical of outcomes whereas they wouldn't be otherwise.

The NFL is a big greasy rat that needs to be cut open and bled out.

It will be interesting if the NFL will keep the SuperBowl in the Meadowlands (which they offered as a blatant bribe) when this starts getting nasty.

Indio posses an interesting point , what is going to be the stance of pro leagues ? I actually think it would make the sport 3 x more profitable and marketable and at least 2x more views.

I'm sure it will increase viewership across the board especially. Betting is one thing but watching the last 2 minutes of the game adds a whole new dimension to the "rush".

It will be interesting to see how the conservative's on the high court rule. Big business, or state's right's?

Also, Christie hugging on Obama right before the election might be an indicator.

Nevada's one of four states with an exemption. Google federal statute PASPA (Professional And Amateur Sports Protection Act).

If sports betting were to be legal how would it be set up? If it were legal in NJ does that mean only people who had permanent addresses in the state could go on and bet/receive payouts?

Why are higher ups so against sports betting being legal in other states?? Obviously they know that anyone can bet on any game as it stands whether it be in Vegas, another country, online, or through town/city bookies that can be found on every corner......so what gives?

I really don't get it......If it's for the PR, the average citizen doesn't care about gambling and I would argue that more NFL fans prefer gambling than those that are "against it" which is a very small %.

    Makes no sense to me.

This was expected. The deadline for the DOJ to file was Sunday.

Why does the USDOJ's involvement suddenly mean NJ is SOL?

New Jersey is going to win this case. If it gets to the Supreme Court, A GOP Gov'r with a right/center Supreme Court debating states rights?

If I were Christie, I would rattle the NFL's cage gathering enough ex-NFL players and filing a class action suit on behalf of CTE.

Just to get the NFL's attention.

I will tell you right now if AC does not get sports betting that city will go under. Back in the day before casinos really started to pop up in each state they had a monopoly on the gaming industry in terms of where to go if you wanted to play BJ, however now with so much competition in neighboring states AC is so overbuilt there is no way each casino can hold its own. They need an added draw and without sports betting it is gonna be an inevitable slow death for AC. This case is being heard in Trenton,NJ so I would like to think if they would ever get a favorable ruling it would come from a judge who resides in the state and knows very well how bad AC is suffering. The leagues no damn well that sports betting is the sole reason why their leagues have done so well. I just hope the fair decision is made and this is legalized as it is in Las Vegas.

Brock they can make all the laws they want, but if the law is flawed (as it obviously is here) and NJ as a state is challenging it then this will be overturned. There is nothing the DOJ can do about it. This the definition of what is unconstitutional The federal government does not have the authority to dictate how a state is allowed to generate revenue. The only way NJ has a shot to lose this is if they get a bad ruling and decide just to continue to not fight this, however if they continue to push this as high up as the Supreme Court then they will inevitably win. Its as simple as that.
