IBAS allows Totesport to cheat player

This is an old thread with new information.

    Description:
A player bet into a "bad line" on a soccer match. Totesport changed the spread on the wager, making a winning wager lose. Justin7 examines the case, and gives his analysis.

Totesport vs. Player: IBAS finds in favor of sportsbook
On 1/29/2009 SBR reported on a player's ToteSport (SBR Rating B-) complaint. The sportsbook had changed the player's winning wager, making it a losing bet.

Totesport (SBR rating B-) gives player wager he did not place
On January 17, 2009, a player wagered 125 Sterling on Wolverhampton +1 goal at the price of +433. After Wolverhampton covered, he found an email from Totesport telling him there was an "input error," commonly referred to as a "bad line" when talking about American sports. As a result of this "error" Totesport reversed the spread, changing his winning wager into a losing one. Totesport's terms and conditions allow it to adjust prices, but not spreads. When confronted with this fact by the player, it would not cite a rule allowing it to take this action. Totesport would not discuss the issue with SportsbookReview.
IBAS reviewed the dispute between the player and Totesport, and ruled in favor of Totesport. In its ruling, IBAS did not consider whether Totesport's rules allow it to alter the spread in a pending wager. IBAS states it is an independant third party organization servicing the UK gambling industry. IBAS stands for Independent Betting Adjudication Service.

    IBAS ruling:
    IBAS Opinion

So now to the new information:
10 minutes ago i looked at my bank account and to my astonishment Totesport have refunded 125£. So far I have not recieved any information regarding the reason for the refund. Neither has IBAS contacted me after I asked for the possibilities to appeal. However, my conclusion is that someone felt somewhat guilty...

Anyone who has experiened anything similar???

£125 = your stake or your stake + winnings?

Not so much guilt, they're just scared of being taken to court like Blue Square recently when they voided legitimate bets, got backing from their regulator on their position but, when threatened with legal action, eventually paid out everyone.

So just the stake i.e. voided the bet.

Thanks for the update Wea! It's likely Justin7 helped you get your money back. The 125 was costing them thousands of views on the negative feedback and it was anchoring in search engines.

    125£ = stake

They changed the line so it was not winning anymore.
But I'm still a bit surprised that no reason has been given for the cashback. It would be nice to know if it is Tote themselves or via IBAS the payback has been arranged. Just to know who has changed their line of reasoning.

Well I do not know if it was Justin7, but there is certainly a big possibilty for that. Anyway I'm greatful for his nice video.

I hope Totesport got their fare share of damage as I still think that this was an 100% obvious cheat without any legal ground. I certainly made my best to get it covered in a number of foras and other places as well... If they cheat the word must be spread so they know that it will hurt.

Wea, you bet into a line which you knew was an OBVIOUS ERROR.

While I certainly disagree with ToteSport changing the terms of the wager as opposed to simply voiding the bet, your hands certainly aren't clean in this matter.

Yes, I did bet into a line that I knew was bad. But I have never seen a bookie of any half desent or better standar that does anything else than void the bet. It is a good way to find out how thrustworthy they are...

    Now som more info:
    Dear Mr *****
I write following the receipt of your emailed request for the Panel to
    revisit your case.
Further to the Panel requesting further correspondence to Totesport
outlining some of their concerns the company agreed to refund your stake
back to your account. I believe this action has already been undertaken
and your account credited with the relevant funds.
If you require clarification of any further points please do not
    hesitate to contact this Service.
    Regards
    Danny Cracknell
    Adjudication Manager
    IBAS

I do not really know what to read into this, but it certainly sounds a bit like already mentioned above. Afraid for legal action...

Case closed, you're lucky to get anything back. If you try to screw them, how do you honestly expect them to react?

They (and the entire UK industry) should have a consistent policy on this, but don't get your hopes up.

Karma will get you in the end..

ROFL. So if you think a store has an item mispriced by a factor of 5, you try to buy it, and somebody notices during checkout, you're lucky if they don't steal the cash you were paying with? GMAFB.

Tote set the price, he accepted it. Did Wea do anything wrong? NO! It's a free market. Who can they blame? TOTE!
