Australian gamblers hoping to live wager legally

Australian gamblers hoping to live wager legally

Australian gamblers could be live betting in the next 12 months, according to a report published today by the Herald Sun. Industry insiders believe that allowing in-play wagering online could provide $300M a year for the country; a marked increase over current revenue generated through telephone and brick & mortar establishments. | Read more

Yet another example of how screwy this law is.

In a further sign of the inconsistencies between laws, Senator Conroy later told a senate committee that punters placing telephone bets under the National Broadband Network would be accidentally breaking the law soon because their copper wire line would be replaced by voice-over-internet-protocol (VOIP).

"We are phasing out the copper network and replacing it by fibre so effectively when people move to a VOIP phone service and pick up the exact same physical phone they were using before the copper was turned off they will suddenly be committing an offence by accident,” he said.

"Technology is leaping ahead of the legislation."
But it's a bit worrying that Xenophon is already arcing up. Guy is hardcore militant when it comes to this.

Xenophon is a blight to our country, he will go all in to try and stop this.

Let me add that this may also save people money, with most books now minimum 50-100 to phone in a live bet.

Yeah true! Sometimes people want to take a punt live but they're forced to up their bet size because of the phone rules. At least if nothing else it'll at least make the laws consistent. I think it was Conroy who said this morning on TV that it makes zero sense how during the State of Origin match he could pick up a phone and make a live bet on the game but couldn't online. Either ban both forms or neither.

The poker I'm not too excited about since everyone plays now anyway. I guess the benefit would be that sites like Centrebet and 365 that already offer it overseas will open it up here. More competition never hurts.

The fact that it will be able to be used in-play at any aussie book is important to me i prefer keeping my money local, sportsbet/iasbet have put in very good live betting platforms since there site upgrades, all they need now is to add live scores with it and its perfect. Also the cashout feature which is classed as live betting (cause its live, derr) on betfair.

    Screw poker.

Not for me, I make less than 10 phone live bets a year, bring in online in-play betting and I will do plenty.

I don't think I've made a live (phone) bet since last years brownlow medal.

NZ tab is crap, plus I doubt they would let Aussies bet live online if they do it at all. Call them and ask, also call an Aussie bookie about this up coming live betting situation, I look forward to the video. Thanks in advance JJ!

I'm assuming it must be or some politicians wouldn't be crying for the live betting odds to stop being shown during matches. And books wouldn't pay for those live odds updates on TV if they weren't getting money out of it.

I used to live bet all the time on the phone until I started to play at 365 again. After doing it online, it's too frustrating to have to call each time. I still do it but not that often. Odds change too quickly in tennis to make it worth it by the time you phone it in.

    No

And there is no sportsbook in australia that will take a $5 phone live bet. All are minimum $50-$100

Lowest I know of is Centrebet which I think is $25. Could be $30.

Anyway, exciting news, let us hope this becomes a reality.

It's 20 on both sport and racing, same with centrebet.

Sportsbet now apparently for in-play $5 minimum but not in-play $50 for sport and $20 for racing or the other way around over phone.

Betfair is $100 right? If i remember correctly during Aussie open this year.

Betfair is just the normal $5 minimum if you already have a bet in the market. Or $20 min if you don't.
