Moving to Canada *Questions regarding betting legally sports and poker/ and other?'s

I know a lot of Canadians are on the forum here and figured maybe some of yall came from USA at one point or another.. or maybe u have friends that did and know some rules with regards to sportsbetting or poker regulations.

I will be moving there eventually but with laws I have to first obtain a visitor **** for 6 months and get a work permit to obtain permit residency later on... The work permit and obtaining a job seems like a difficult task in and of itself and truthfully the laws are crazy in where u cant obtain a work permit without having a job offer, yet on the same guideline u cannot look for jobs while on visitor ****. LOL. so how in the hell do they expect people to get a job offer if u cannot look for work?

In any case the above things have me so confused... but I have 6 months to figure that out I suppose... In the meantime I want to get down to gambling legally in Canada.

Some questions I have about gambling in general:

    1. How soon after moving there can I begin to bet at Pinnacle or other sites that are for other countries outside of USA? What kind of proof do I need that shows I am in Canada or is it as simple as an IP check they do?.. Sorry if this sounds fairly obvious.. but from the outside looking in I want to begin betting there since I am officially moving there anyway.

    2. in the usa.. everything is looked at with scrutiny.. transactions.. bank deposits.. etc.. Can I simply get a bank account there and start loading and unloading funds to a sportsbook now that I am in Canada? or do they still not have a fond policy on gaming transactions?.. Or with moneybookers or whatever maybe is the traditional way of doing things.. how hard is it to get a mb acct and begin to fund and transfer/etc that way? Can I get any of this done within a few weeks of being there or?

For the record I will have a permanent address there and will be living legitimately.. I just can only use visitor pass for now due to the laws and how long applying for other immigration status takes (12-24 months to become upgraded basically). For legality purposes i definitely do have a sponsor and am looking for a company to work at which will help in the issuing of a work permit to become fully sponsored in that realm also.

One final question to anyone who reads this from SBR Staff directly.. Lou/Shari/Justin7/John/Bill/Sam/Rod/Loshak/etc and many more...or anyone else with this example and experience moving while being a forum memeber.

What will this do to my status on sbr?.. Am I all of a sudden able to participate as a Canadian player for poker/store/etc other purposes?... what do I need to submit to yall to prove that I am in Canada and will be there long term?

any other help or follow up questions are welcome and appreciated

    thx guys

A Canadian drivers license, and a Canadian I.P address and you should be OK.

Stash, before you go putting a lot of effort into being able to game in Canada be aware that the gaming landscape there is changing very rapidly.

Single game sports wagering is a thing of the very near future there and that will be the end of online gaming in it's current form. The landscape for online play will be no different than what you currently have available. The Canadian government will regulate all single game wagering and own all wagering functions. Be advised that they will be much better at enforcing any loopholes in that regulation as well. Financial transactions in Canada are under a very strong microscope there and transgressors are dealt with severely through the tax and banking laws. There are only 5 or 6 financial institutions there and the banks are highly scrutinized and regulated.

Canada is no place to try and hide money or beat the system and again the system is rapidly changing. Before you get too exited about wagering there under a government umbrella be aware that you are probably looking at .20 lines and low limits. The OLGC is one of the worst outs in the history of wagering bar none.

Where did you get this information? Just because you're within Canada doesn't mean you have to use a Canadian book...

So you think the Canadian Government is going to set up it's own single game entity and allow Canadians to play online?? And even more of a reach, you think that RBC, BMO, TD et al are going to process your transfers??

C'mon Sprayer, you know the Canadian government better than that I hope.

I believe if I find the right company to hire me then I can get permanent resident and all will be well.. In the meantime I do plan to gamble for a living so to speak.

ty for the simply put comment. as far as drivers license goes.. I have a Usa license.. how easy is it to "switch over" and get a Canadian one? my gf doesnt drive and uses the subway buses/cabs/etc . I plan to do the same.. but having a license for the long term is ideal because I am a driver.. never havent drove for a week or so . LOL

i am not moving to accommodate for poker or sports.. I am moving to start a new life in Canada with her.. gambling and poker just come as a bi-product.. and its exciting to think about playing at pinnacle again after a decade but in the grand scheme I have done fine in the usa as is so the change will be un-needed but I am sure I will like it in the end..

As far as poker goes.. is partypoker from back in the day legal there? or is pokerstars basically the top tier?

    P.s.
If u own a company in Toronto I may be coming ur way to apply soon

Half a mill for a two to three bedroom house or between 1800 to 2000 for a two bedroom apartment a month.

    Hey Stash!

I cannot help with the immigration or betting laws (other than to give my non-expert opinion on poker) but I can help with the lay of the land on locations around the GTA (Greater Toronto Area).

Stash, utility bill is a key. If you have Canadian drivers license this makes it really easy - local ID + utility bill can get changed over quick, verify any account etc.

If you have an old Pinnacle account from when they took US, just change your address, and make a deposit. When you go to bet your limits will be $0.04. Email security with a copy of ID (US passport if it's all you got, and Canadian utility bill in own name) doesn't take long - under 24 hours and are changed over to Canadian account.

Not Canada now, but I've done this and most everyone I know has left the US as well, doing the same.

I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying, but i'm just not sure that the Canadian government wants to put the $$$ and effort into shutting out Canadians from betting online. The American government has put the time and effort into it, but I also think it's because there is a much bigger % of the American population that is against gambling. Canadians are much more easy going with it, and don't want to spend our tax dollars on stopping it.

There was an article on Covers a while back discussing this. I believe the person they interviewed was involved in the Gaming industry in Canada, and he believed that the online landscape will stand pat after single game wagering is legalized.

Now in 5 years that could certainly change....

But lets just hope that the provinces enjoy the slice of the betting pie that they'll receive, and don't force the Federal government to step in on the online sportsbooks.

This is something we have plans for too obviously.. but honestly it doesnt speed up the process much as applying takes 12-20 months from what I have read elsewhere... so for relationship wise yes this will be in the near future.. for job wise its not helpful until almost 2 yrs afterwords.

I would be very careful with that assumption. The onus on regulation can be shifted to the financial sector very easily in Canada. In the US there are thousands and thousands of chartered financial institutions. A very big deal to regulate. In Canada there are six. They will make no effort to outlaw online play. They will simply make it impossible to transact.

Of course the majority Canadian government will appear to be at arms length but I am well enough informed on Canadian affairs to know that if the government can't have the biggest slice of a pie then there will be no pie at all.

Joe Comartin the MP responsible for the introduction of single game wagering holds his seat in Windsor. I am more than familiar with his office. I have several outs tied to the Canadian banking system. I am very wary of keeping much more than a nominal investment in them.

Good luck with the move Stash. You probably won't end up loving having Pinny back as much as you will love having access to free, easy and reliable deposit/withdrawal methods for any book you use.

Why hasn't the Canadian government pressured the financial institutions to stop processing online payments to online casinos? It would increase their revenue. The Windsor casinos would be happy.

A more likely scenario is that in five or ten yrs online books will be setting up shop in Canada, and the government will be getting revenue that way. Think Kanawakee Reserve.

Will you have a work permit or S.I.N. ? You will not be able to work without either or. I do have some good ideas for work in the T.O area but need to know your skill set/degree.
