    The Feds backing off..

Yesterday we had a thread about the DOJ basically refusing to no longer pursue UIGEA.

Turns out the decision was made back in September, and was just announced/told to Congress yesterday.

There is an article in today's NYPost, and the WSJ about the decision, if you guys want it, I can link it.

But. The bottom line is this. The DOJ is making a distinction between Poker and Gambling on Sports. They have decided that states can implement their own online gambling efforts---allowing for poker rooms to pop up at the state level, but they will not allow sports wagering.

Most of the big casinos are jumping for joy at the decision---and some of the european gaming companies stock prices soared on this news.

It is going to be interesting to look this a year from now.

Will the DOJ be less stingy on off-shore sportsbook? Will it become easier for us folks to deposit?

I don't understand why the government just don't start their own poker site. They could rake in so much money. Would solve a lot of the debt worries.

Judging on how well the post office is working, if they ever ran a poker site it'd make Bodog Poker look like a fortune 500 company.

Putting those two sites in the same sentence is a massive insult to Stars. No reason for Americans to not want to go back to Stars.

I wouldn't want sportsbetting legal in USA. Just leave the offshore books alone and I"ll be very happy.

Everyone is already required to pay taxes on net winnings, regardless of where they bet sports. I guess some of you don't want to lose the ability to commit tax evasion.

Actually, none of this is what it seems. The Feds haven't suddenly woken up and realised the Wire Act only applies to sports. The Barton Bill is in the pipeline, and when that gets through, they'll have the legislation they want, ie. they won't need to pretend the Wire Act illegalises anything beyond sports. So they can now "come clean" about what we all (including them) already knew.

The government should do only those things it is allowed to do under the Constitution. I see nothing there that permits running a gambling site. Perhaps you found it under the Commerce Clause. That's where people of a certain political persuasion - not saying that you are one - seem to find the justification for almost anything they want to do.

Then again, I have libertarian tendencies and always ask "Where does the government get the authority to do this?"
