In a 2-to-1 landslide, New Jersey voters on Tuesday approved a bill that would allow wagering on sporting events at the state’s racetracks and casinos but significant hurdles remain before horseplayers at Monmouth Park can also bet on the New York Yankees.
The state will have to have federal legislation prohibiting the expansion of sports wagering overturned in order to offer full sports wagering.
Governor Chris Christie said the vote will help the state’s efforts to overturn the federal legislation.
“With this referendum, we have an opportunity that gives the state more solid footing to challenge the federal ban on sports wagering outside of a few select places,” Christie told the Philadelphia Inquirer
State Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D., Union), the legislature's main proponent of sports wagering, said he planned to introduce legislation Thursday that would authorize the New Jersey Casino Control Commission to begin the process for licensing sports betting at casinos and horse tracks in Mays Landing, Freehold, Monmouth, and the Meadowlands.
"I expect to get it to Gov. Christie for his signature before the end of the year," Lesniak said Tuesday night. "By the start of next year's NFL season, when the Eagles play the Giants, you'd better reserve your room soon in Atlantic City, because it will be packed, just like Las Vegas is now."
If we could just get gamblind passed in the US we would never have to deal with scumbag books treating us like we are lucky to have them. The shoe would absolutely be on the other foot.
