    Writing a Research Paper

I am writing a research paper on gambling and more specifically sports betting. Has anyone read an article or have a link that lays out the issue both for and against?

    Thanks in advance.

You should probably start off with understanding the issues at hand. Sports betting is legal only in the state of Nevada. Horse racing is an exception. Find out why all sports leagues are against it and their power in Washington.

Then understand why Americans like to gamble on sports. Talk about super bowl pools, hockey pools, poker, casinos, whatever you want to prove that Americans have an insatiable thirst for gambling.

Then find out how Americans are getting around the legal requirements through using all of the vendors you see at the top of the page. Look into how they are being funded. Understand the risks involved in getting money from these vendors due to DOJ restrictions. Look for instances of where people are not getting paid, of less than reputable books going under, and the threat of some sites being prosecuted and blocked by DOJ.

Is there one good paper out there? No. Let it be yours. Form your own opinions, but don't just use SBR. Use some anti-gambling sources as well.

    Good luck.

As a start, search Nelson Rose in this site, and listen his interviews.

Contrasting the US position with how it works for the rest of the world would be an important element imho.

So wait, YOU are writing a research paper on the issue but you're asking US to do all the research and give you links?

    Odd.

I would be glad to post some links if you can be more specific about what you are writing about, the situation in the US this week after the jersey vote, the history of uigea, the recent history of gambling and anti-gambling legislation in the us, lotteries, sportsbooks, poker? How things are handled in the various states?

If you are following this issue, this is a tangled issue with alot of state legislatures and various state attorney generals having more effect than anything on the federal level right now. This is going to be a very long term paper, you need to narrow your focus of the paper.

There is a ton of academic literature out there, most of it predating the UIGEA, but still relevant on the psychological arguments. There are 2 or 3 pieces contrasting regulatory regimes in different countries, a couple looking at the UIGEA (Regulation vs Prohibition) and several looking at other areas (Virtual Worlds, Fantasy sports) and whether they can/should be separated from traditional gambling.

That said, as I tell students, search the academic databases or Google Scholar for the key words and you'll find plenty.

Actually, I'd say many Asian countries, especially big ones up&coming (China, India) don't allow it. No moneybookers transactions and several blocked betting sites.

It makes sense from country viewpoint - its nationals, on average, lose money to outsiders, with accompanying problems which derive from that.
