    Am I overreacting?

Maybe I'm a noob and don't understand, but I just went to sign up at 5dimes and had some trouble so they asked me over email for my account number and password. I have been warned for years by every website in the world to never give out my pw and that I would never be asked for my password (even by cs) because of fraud etc. I think that's pretty obvious and simple stuff.

So I called and the cs rep seemed baffled that I refused to give him my password and then he said he could already see it and that's the only way they can verify who I am, which of course isn't true for most companies....there are many ways to verify someone's identity without asking for their pw. The fact that he works for the company doesn't mean anything to me, I don't trust him any more than some random person on the street. And they dont even encrypt my password...any person working there can see all my info at any time?

Am I overreacting, or does this seem crazy to everyone else too?

Haha, the same thing happens to me. They would ask me for my pw, and I recall all the e-mails I've gotten from other companies saying "Our agents will never ask for your password so never give it out online".

I know it's still probably safe, but I always refuse. 5D often has some other security questions they ask you instead, in order to verify you.

    You're not overreacting at all.

It's just a horrendous security issue and the best outfits don't work that way at.

Every book I've played with asks for it as confirmation when placing phone wagers. Agreed, don't like it.

There are only a couple of bookies that act this way. Personally, I'm always hesitant to provide such info to some person who might be outsourced and working from some china and asia.

thanks for the replies guys, glad to know others find this as nuts as I do. It unfortunate because I want to spread my roll around to get the best lines but I seem limited because I would never sign up with a company who ask for my pw. And judging by some replies this seems pretty common.

Do you know what reputable books that don't ask for your pw?

Just tell them you won't give out your PW and they will ask for some other verification.

You can give out a random string to see if it works. Some said it worked for them. Personally I don't care much because it is a relatively tiny added risk for players from US when you consider the whole environment. If you are from other country, then it is another deal.

It wouldn't matter if you did change your password so long as the system allows the staff to see what it is.

I'd avoid any bookie or other institution which has such a lax system.

almost all the bookies do this (bookmaker, betmaker, heritage, betislands, 5dimes, etc). yes it's bad practice and i don't know a single bookie site that even encrypts the login screen w/ SSL.

I did. I said that I would send my id/passport etc and he said the only way to verify me is to give my pw. And that was after I asked to speak with a manager about it. To be honest, I am not interested in playing with any site that doesn't encrypt my pw and that allows cs to see it. Again, I don't trust these people as far as I could throw them, even if they worked for the "security department." People are thieves, plain and simple, especially in the gambling world.

yeah you have no reason to use them if you are really bothered by the practice. you are not overracting at all, but it is harsh reality for yanks.

    This.

I too was surprised at first and hung up the phone and told customer service to F off. It is however consistent in the industry and that is how it's done.

It is apparently consistent amongst that part of the industry based in CR.

Certainly not amongst the better establishments in more secure jurisdictions.

You're not overrieacting at all. I played at a lot of books like BETUS and 5dimes. As I remember both of them asked for my password when I called them up on phone.

You can't do anything at all just trust them that they won't start placing random wagers with your money and say that the log files says that you placed them.

It must be very hard to trust them if every Mexican emigrant who works there can see your login information and if they have the mood they can just loggin from their PC and place bets with your money.

Even a primitive website can encrypt your password in a way that even the admin can't find it out, just send you a new one if you forget it. Why can't books do the same?

Yes that is bad, and at first I wouldnt do it either but eventually I guess you have to. I have one that is worse. For the longest time at Heritage (Premerger) during the casino contests they were posting my fuking password (and others) as my "nickname" on the scoreboard. I called and absolutley raised hell and their excuse was that is how the software manufacturer had it programmed. I said BULLSHIT. They finally got it fixed but I took a few screenshots with my password along with 5 or six other peoples passwords in plain site. I will look and see if I can find it.

That's not really the major danger.
Someone just placing random bets on your account can't benefit from it unless they are on an exchange and matching bets against your account so there is really no incentive in it.
The danger is that they can change your email, login and banking details and withdraw your funds.

At Betfair for example, you are provided with a separate telephone account number which the operator can use only to place bets for you. It doesn't allow them to access your password or make critical account changes or withdrawals.

Awful site really? There are not many sites nearly as good as 5dimes. A million betting options, easy platform, and most importantly they pay on time every time, unlike many of these suspect shops nowadays!
