How do teams in Britain move up in divisions?

I'm a soccer novice but was in England to visit friends and they tried to explain to me how teams move up in class to higher divisions. Are there some teams that are so low end where they are the graveyard of soccer teams where they just get has beens and never will be's to play for them because they don't make much money or spend money on players? What teams are the absolute worst teams where they have been on the bottom the longest? Are there some teams that go from bottom to top in a short time frame or vice versa from top to bottom in a short time?

Its a fascinating thing, the promotion/relegation bit. I wish American sports was as unionized to pull this off but we dont have lower leagues to make it happen. Anyway here you are, this will explain it.

The "bottom" is many, many divisions below the top league (the Premiership) where teams consist of amateurs playing in their local leagues. This lists all the leagues:

It is pretty unusual for a team in the top flight to ever be relegated more than 3 divisions down or so. Among current Premiership teams, Wigan and Reading were 3 divisions down in the mid 90s and got promoted 3 times in the next 10 years or so, but neither team was ever all that much lower than the 3 divisions down, if at all.
