    This is what i've learned from watching the world cup (rarely watch soccer) the forward and the defender can be in the back in together vertically in line and once the forward teammate kicks the ball to him he can out run the defender to the ball and leave himself with the goalie. The forward just has to be inline or before the defender until the ball is kicked to him then its a free for all... maybe someone else can give a better response
