Howard's biggest accomplishment in basketball came in 1997, when North Brunswick High School, with Howard as the point guard, won the Middlesex County final over St. Joseph's of Metuchen, whose point guard was Jason Williams, now the all-American at Duke University.
Despite his basketball exploits, Howard went directly from high school into professional soccer and is now one of the young goalkeepers with great promise for the United States national team. He was the backup goalkeeper in the Olympics last summer, then became the MetroStars' starter after two apprentice seasons under Tony Meola and Mike Ammann.
