I'm surprised he survived the World Cup. His name as a player has the Dutch hypnotized. He wasn't involved with soccer at all for about ten years, just playing golf; then expressed a desire to return, got to coach the second team of Ajax for about a year (shared responsibility with another former player), and suddenly out of nowhere was offered the national team. He felt he couldn't turn down such an opportunity, even though it came too early. I don't blame van Basten. If the Dutch soccer federation wants to turn the national team into an experiment, hey, be my guest.
