I can't see him replacing Alonso, he would add good depth but I can't see him developing or playing regular football at Real until Alonso retires or gets too old.

He is better off going to a big club with where a player of his position is needed, right now he is a key player and central to the Dortmund team. Dortmund have alot of money, great tradition, stadium, support and a history of doing well in the Champions League aswell. It would have been good to see him stay another season, Dortmund strengthen their squad and try to make a name for themselves in Europe first.
