Watched this a few weeks ago, forgot to write the reaction post.

Quantum simulation seems like the most feasible application. Also machine learning or forecasting for special overly complex problems to solve. Not sure about the cryptography applications, companies always cheap out on security. They haven't even secured traditional computers successfully.

The mechanics of the computer sounds crazy, was barely understanding the overviews of the different types of computers.

Not sure if this is going to be a major disruptor in the business world or make countries with the biggest quantum computers more of a superpower. Scientific discovery to further man's understanding of the UNIverse seems like a more realistic outcome.

Machine learning has a rich ecosystem of libraries with traditional computers. Who's going to program these quantum computers? Now you have to know quantum mechanics to program a quantum computer? I guess that's expected for scientists to know, but you don't have to know science and math to program traditional computers. It would be cool if software libraries separated the underlying entanglement and nature of the quantum computer from the programmer to make certain use cases easier. You just define the problem and the library takes care of the low level programming. Will there be a rich open source ecosystem for quantum computers? Right now people around the world can contribute to open source with traditional computers, requiring a quantum computer would make it more of an obstacle. Maybe you can simulate quantum computers for testing and development with traditional computers to get around the obstacle of being able to work on one.

Computer processors are becoming simpler which makes sense for most circumstances. I think the software revolution will be more impactful on humanity than quantum computers at this point.

It's always funny to read the wrong predictions Bill Gates made about computers in the early days. I wonder how quantum computers will turn out and if an unexpected use case becomes popular.

This was a similar objection that some people would bring up when talking about commercialization of the internet in the early 90s.

QM seems a lot more complex than the internet and web but there was the same lack of widespread knowledge, resources and tools to make it accessible at first. But a decade later all that was more than resolved. I'd think it would evolve similarly if an evolutionary quantum computer solution suddenly became accessible to the masses.

If two objects travel toward each other at the speed of light what is their collision velocity?

That's a trick question, you can't have a collision because the objects have no mass at the speed of light.
(I learned this from a science professor who was big on Sir Isaac Newton, his three laws of motion and all that)

For argument sake, suppose both objects did have mass at the speed of light both objects (if they indeed have mass) colliding both would be driven backwards at the speed of the light...

Actually, Einstein's special relativity sort of rewrites Newton's Laws when it comes to these extremes. Take this little lesson back to your science professor...

To get a mass to move at the speed of light would require basically infinite energy as it accelerates to the speed of light.

But remember, E = M C^2 ("e" equals "m" "c" squared) and the C is constant.

That means an object moving at the speed of light would actually have mass, it has by definition, according to Einstein, infinite mass. This is why things can't move at the speed of light, because to approach that speed would increase the energy needed which would increase the mass of the object, which in turn requires yet more energy to continue to accelerate towards the speed of light.

To preserve the fact that the speed of light ("C") is constant the energy and mass go to infinity and as far as momentum and force are concerned, we are again dealing with infinity.

As far as what would happen when they collide, Newton might think (assuming the molecules have held up and our masses are still intact) that the objects would bounce back with proportionate energy, and they might.
