In the most recent federal election? I did not. I'm taking the $10 fine - reduced from $100+ thanks to COVID.

I will be in the state election in Nov as I have a clue who I want to vote for.

Yes. And it's a great idea.

Compulsory voting means none of the 900 mules ballot box stuffing issues and also takes away most of the power of special interest groups like super pacs.

I thought Australia was the hardest country when it comes to COVID policy, but boy they are amateurs compared to China.

We don't vote for President/PrimeMinister. Just our local representative and which party/s we want in the senate (house of review).

I voted for an independent who ran on issues in our local area.

But I bet on the losers who I said were a lock earlier in this thread.

Your ideology prevents you from making good decisions.

You seem very unhappy with the US system. Maybe compulsory voting could solve quite a few issues, in particular your 9000 Mules problem.

my anti tyranny beliefs allows clarity and consistency in my comments. I won't abandon them simply because a political party, I mostly identify with, makes a bad policy or law.

I have always said that money needs to be taken out of politics. A reasonable cap of a half a million let's say on ads during a campaign. Or a million or 250K. Whatever the amount. The rest of the time should be televised debates and town halls. Things like that. Talking about the issues. Not who had more money to spend on Ads.

The Mules problem can be solved rather easily. Its been done countless times in the past and its still done in other countries today, including Canada. Paper ballots! No early voting. No ballot harvesting. No computers. No mass mailings to thousands of people who don't even live there anymore. If you wanna vote, you got to go out to a polling outlet and cast your vote in person. Its worked forever and its the safest way to ensure election integrity.

I agree that making each voter do some sort of "work" to submit a vote is one of the best ways to ensure integrity.

Compulsory voting allows smaller parties to compete and takes away the power of those with the most money to always win. Candidates do not have to spend the money to mobilize the right voting group. It becomes all about the actual policies. And it's genuinely not looked at as an imposition. If you simply reply to the $20 fine saying you felt too sad to leave the house on the day, thats the end of it. Well over 90% participate.

what about someone's right not to vote as their way to show their displeasure of either of the political parties? Or for any reason actually?

Here's the other side of the coin you are holding. We have all seen videos of idiots who are supporting and yes voting for a certain political party. They come in all shapes and size and no matter what side you are on, all of us have either said it or thought to themselves at one time or another, something like ... "And these are the people who are allowed to vote" or "and these are the people voting for _____" or "These people shouldn't be allowed to vote".

    So what's better?

    1. Make people vote or be punished?
    2. Allow people to choose whether they want to vote or not?

If you want to be ideological about it, then you choose to pay the fine every 4 years I guess. No biggie.
