AGA asks DOJ to stamp out illegal sportsbooks

With sports betting now legal and regulated in 30 states and Washington, D.C. — and likely launching in three more states this year — the AGA wants the Justice Department to “stamp out” the illegal market.

In a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, AGA CEO Bill Miller said the expansion of legal sports betting opportunities has cut into the illegal market’s business, but not enough.

Miller cited research conducted by the Washington, D.C., trade organization that showed 74 percent of sports gamblers believed it was important to only wager with legal providers. However, 52 percent continued to patronize illegal bookmakers. Most of the sports bettors – 63 percent – told researchers they were surprised to learn the sites they were using were unregulated and illegal sportsbooks.

“The availability of these illegal sites is driving confusion,” Miller wrote in the letter.

He said nationwide internet searches for offshore sportsbook brands increased 38 percent last year, which was “faster than the search growth for legal U.S. operators.” He added that searches for offshore brands represented a majority of all sportsbook searches. Bovada, for example, accounted for 50 percent of all searches.

The AGA found support for its effort from a DraftKings executive — Griffin Finan, vice president of government affairs — who said the Boston-based company has long maintained that “eradicating the illegal market and bringing customers onto a legal, regulated platform must be a top priority for the industry.”
Finan said without legal sports wagering, “customers are left unprotected but states are also losing out on significant tax dollars.”

Miller said the Justice Department needs to “make it a priority” to crack down on the illegal sports betting market to protect a legal gaming industry that has an annual economic impact of $261 billion nationwide and supports more than 1.8 million jobs.

Offshore can never be stopped completely. They take down all the big sites, it will just materialize into alternate sites. If offshore keeps offering a more competitive book with better odds and faster payouts, they will never go away.

You have to understand these are the bread and butter of other countries as well so they won't go down without a fight.

It all started with the "New Jersey Model" of legalized State sportsbetting.

At this point I don't think it will change much, to be honest.

    But will be following closely.

Agreed, the US Treasury made their move.

But that was before Chris Christie made his.

So it's worth following, I suppose.

All these ppl want is money from taxes

They want you to pay on your winnings

If you sell a painting on ebay for 800 bucks they want you to pay taxes on it

If your kid goes out and cuts grass one summer and makes a couple thousand bucks, they want you to pay taxes on it

They want to suck every penny out of you

Health care in this country is a joke, you pay and arm and a leg

Meanwhile trump paid 750 bucks in federal taxes a couple years ago

    Bezos paid nothing

I dont even understand how people in manhattan or california make a living

There are probably ppl who live in those states who have been working for 20-30 years and have nothing saved

That’s why you always have a broker as a back up

Yeah processors will get pinched again, that leaves crypto's as the target.

Not much more they can or will do.

Target the end user? They said they wouldn't do that.

Probably can't without changing existing laws anyway.

Yeah, they got their hands full.

That's why I don't think it will change much.

Will require some overhauling legislation that happens to affect the offshore gamblers too.

Merrick Garland can suck a fat one as well as Griffin Finan. Of course they are crying foul because they aren't making money so they need to try and put a stranglehold on anything else. Legal sportsbooks are the worst thing to happen. It's criminal what they can get away with.

If they will accept a $500k wager from whales- there should be a minimum they are required to accept from anyone else. Refusing business to winning players is such a cop out. If they take up to $500k without moving a line for big bettors they should be required to take $5,000 limit from anyone else. 100-1 ratio or something.

When you are betting with illegal sportsbooks you are betting for the enenies of the US who don't pay taxes. When you play with US books your taxes are used to support our military that keeps us free. Does your freedom worth the touble of betting with illegal sportsbooks?

Aren’t you in California also? Tough to impose this type of thing when 65% of states don’t let you gamble legally

I've got a half a dozen active off shore accounts with balances going on now. Bovada being my favorite. I would not be happy if I got booted off all of them at once and then forced to join Fan Duel or some local crap book.

    I hope this never happens.

I did when Fanduel first came out. I didn't like it. I didn't like the webpage formats and or betting options in general. I bailed on it. I probably still have an active account over there.

Maybe it's changed today but back then it seemed like garbage to me. I like the offshore books period.
