it would depend on field size in the 4 races. the more horses in the sequence the higher the payout even with 4 chalks. conversely, if the fields are all short, 6 or less it would be less. an average payout for the odds you listed would be somewhere around 25.00 for .50. you have to have a price horse or two in there in the 6-1 to 9-1 range or higher to get more. if your price horse defeats a heavy favorite in any of the legs you have wiped out players who singled that particular favorite to save money. i would not play this type of bet if you are a novice. this is horizontal multiple wagering and you are at the mercy of the track who select the races in the sequence. usually there is a maiden race involved in these and most of the horses might not have ever run in a race. i would play vertical wagering in individual races with at least 8 horses and with past performance lines. this would involve picking a winner and the putting other horses underneath that you think will finish 2nd exactas, 3rd trifectas, 4th superfectas. you can play any of these or all of these in any given race. your result is immediate and you can move on to the next race to reinvest your winnings or chase your losses. of course you can play every horse in every leg and guarantee that you will hit it but don't. 2x3x2x1 would cost 6.00 for a .50 bet for example. just multiply the number of horses that you play in first leg x the number in 2nd leg and so forth and divide by 2. once again this is a frustrating but exciting bet if you can make it to the fourth leg and then see your payout on the will pays in advance. it seems it is remarkably easy to get 3 out of 4 which means you lost out on your 3 winners totally unless you played individually in their designated races. it can save you money by if you get "alive" as the 4 races unfold since you probably will just wait it out. an experienced player will play the pick 4 and also bet vertically or a win bet too. as an ancient person i find it hard to believe that anyone born after 1980 has no clue about this gambling venue. yes, they have heard about it and know it exists but sports betting has taken over. between i'd say 1962-1990 this was the only game in town legally. people used to flock to the track in droves you couldn't get a seat in the grandstand and now you would be the only one sitting there if they haven't closed it off. of course home betting and off track parlors totally eliminated the need to actually go unless you want to see it live. full card simulcasting which didn't exist before 1985 has offered players many more options along with expanded types of wagering. I would get everyone picks. Then toss in a few. Hope that makes sense. Some tracks do 50 cent pick 3. 20 cent pick 4. Canada tracks do that
