Yeah, I know things are very serious, but that top pic above, where he is sitting up and looking at the camera, to me, is a very promising picture.

Outside of some complications from procedures, it really does sound like he is on the road to recovery.

It's such a long road and full of danger at every turn, but being on that road, and not still fever high sick from a virus, is such a good sign to me.

He has been through a lot and you can see there is so much more.

BIGDAY is going to do it, he'll be back. What a tough fighter.

Good afternoon, #TeamAndy:

Last night Andy was taken for an MRI, we are still waiting to hear from the neurologist. The ICU team did see mastoiditis. The team at UMC saw a spot in his CT around his ear and treated him with antibiotics. The team here at Regions has begun an ear drop and nasal regimen, the ENT team will follow up.

We continue to face challenges with the PEG tube. The J tube is twisted into his stomach instead of his intestine. They have began giving small feeds into the G tube portion (into stomach) at a slow rate and will continue to monitor his progress and make sure things are moving correctly. The team does not want to face any risks at this time with replacing the PEG tube with a new one, they want to allow more healing and try other options first.

Andy had a great PT session this morning, sitting on the side of the bed strengthening his trunk while trying to sit up with support. The speech therapist was here as well and we heard words! I am sharing a clip of some of the video I took. Some words are more clear than others. We kept telling him one word at a time but he wanted to tell us something else which included a short sentence. Andy has always called me babycakers and he loves to give me air kisses. Take a look at the video, can you hear him? Watch his lips, I can see the kiss! It was a great job and lots of hard work! 😍

A very difficult and private time for the family is being shared to all of us as we have shared resources with their family as well.

Looking better BIGDAY, keep it up McBrides, we are all going to pull you through this.

We are their extended family KVB. The immense rallying and support shown by our community is something families do for one another. The emotional investment is so high for so many of us. My eyes still water up when I say my nightly prayers. This is a tough situation, but we have to continue to help will Bigday to the next step of recovery until the day we see a pound it play!

Gaining momentum

I know some of you are eagerly awaiting an update, so here it is!

Andy has been busy working hard the physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT) and Speech. Yesterday, we learned that it is very clear that he is understanding everything that is talked about whether he is in the conversation or not. Yesterday, Lynn and I were talking about what time she should come home to the girls so that I could go to my evening school event (YES, I went to my new school and met families and students!). At 3:30pm Andy looked at Lynn and she just knew he was trying to tell her something. He mouthed 'Don't you have to go?' and looked at the clock. Lynn told Andy that she didn't have to go until 4pm. For me this is very exciting because it means multiple things: he is comprehending, he is telling time and he is also advocating for me to have some time.

Yesterday, Andy also had a little set back and was talking with his speech therapist about how his trach popped out during PT. Andy was able to tell us how it crunched and hurt as it was put back in. There is a little swelling but he also states it doesn't hurt any more. The PT team felt so bad, he also told them he wasn't mad at them about it. Accidents happen! Today his PT team is challenging him to work on his trunck strength now that he has gained more head control. Today the support was taken away and he was able to maintain holding himself up for about 10 seconds! Now to gain more trunk control without the tables.

The ICU team stated that his MRI shows typical of a west nile patient. My question was, what does that mean? They stated they didn't see anything really alarming (YEAH!!) and the wondering was how long and how much he would recover physically, which only time will tell. There is talk about transitioning to Health East Bethesda Hospital (LTAC) next week.

Fellas...I straight up broke down when Mindi sent me that vid of him speaking the other day. It’s just still hard to believe he’s where he’s at. By the grace of God go I boys.

Bigdays kiddos are still doing well. His youngest is way into softball! I’m putting together a care package for her to make sure she has the best equipment available. We’re not fukkin around with alloy bats and pink fukkin gloves. Get real. I’ll get her hooked up.

One more upside...looks like Bigday has dropped some lbs, so I gotta admit, I’m sick jealous of that
