I know a NFL tout. He's sincere, works hard, and has won the last 2 years (which of course is a ridiculously small sample)... not sure about his results before that. He doesn't bet his own picks, but he does enter handicapping contests in Vegas.
If a guy like that who is legit (at least in terms of his sincerity) isn't betting his own picks I can't imagine that the 90% of touts who are just outright scam artists would be either.
A tout, by definition, is just a sales person. If not, wouldn't they be a profession sports bettor? What is the difference between a wise guy informing someone about a play, and a tout? The tout charges a fee.
Touts are a part of the industry that have their place. There are enough desperate people that need a play spoon-fed to them and that is where the tout comes into play. I have never payed for a play, and I never will.
lang only "bets" when he needs a closing line to turn a loss in to a win/push.
i recall when he gave out a pick and it was +4.5. they lost by 6, but he claimed he bet +6 in a vegas book, even though it was only available for few minutes just prior to tipoff.
he graded it a push even though none of his clients got +6 cause it was a 10:30pm game.
I bet all of mine. But I know that some of them don't, and I will never have a 100 dime play. I did have bloomberg even feature me in an article for wnba.
