The benefit of the doubt always cuts in favor of the person with greater social status in the end, so refusing to honor a preliminary estimate of costs is the correct move in order to perpetuate the perception that the vet is the one best suited to assign dollar values to the health of domestic animals in that area.
a single customer is never a single customer, especially in a small town. if you upset one customer with your business practices (why not just charge the $20 that your employee promised?) then they tell 10 others about how rotten you are and you find all your customers going across the street because of $14.

that's all well and good, but if you're smart enough to say that or stand by that, then you're smart enough to tell your employees not to lowball on estimates.

I see it the other way around, Mike. If someone tells me Centaur's story over the water cooler in a small town, I respect the vet for not being strong-armed over a measly $14 and I gauge Centaur to be something of a cheapskate.

It tells me that veterinarian has a strong enough practice and reputation to let the riff-raff grumble about nothing and that if I go out drinking with Centaur I should make sure he buys a round before I pull out my wallet.

took one of my dogs in to have plaque removed from her teeth.... vet looks at her for 2 seconds and says she doesn't need it.

still charged me $89 for the visit.

didnt make a stink and paid cause they saved another dog of mine after he was bitten by a rattlesnake.

moral of the story: vets are fuking expensive.

              but, did they:

              a) quote you a lower price beforehand and then upped it to $89
              b) not quote a price at all?

maybe YOU respect the vet but the other 5 people at the water cooler think the person got over charged. it's not being a cheapskate when you are told $20 and it ends up being $34.

if you are at a restaurant, and the steak says $20 on the menu and when you get the bill it says $34 are you going to just take it and not say a word? granted this is a different story, but if this kind of things happen then the employees should be trained to err on the high side.

well it depends, is the girl new? did they have to do something else unsuspected once the procedure started?

I would of simply inquired as to exactly why it was quoted 20 instead of 34 and does this happen often, if it's an honest mistake then it's not worth causing a fuss over if you've been going to the vet for years, or plan to in the future. I've never heard of a procedure costing only 20 dollars in the first place, or 34. What did you get, the hair cut between you dogs feet pallets or something? Or a ball shave?

Dr offices are the worst. biggest scam in the world. All the medical field wants is your money. Women that work in dr offices are the biggest fukkin kunts. For the most part drs could care less if your issue is resolved after visiting them. All they want is your fukkin money

I was already a bit frustrated because another lady said the test would take approx 15 minutes and it ended up taking about 40. Otherwise maybe I would have said nothing, i don't know.

Also, no one working there is doable. Young whales or old ladies. Im sure this also had an impact on decision making.

Probably not, but then no restaurant is possibly going to save my beloved pet in the middle of the night after it's been gored by a skunk or raccoon. And even in the case of the restaurant, if it was a place I enjoyed dining at regularly, my approach would be thus. I'd pay the inflated bill without complaint, but on my way out, I'd make an off-hand remark to the host about the discrepancy. If they offered to correct their error I'd tell them to hang onto it and take extra special care of me in the future. If they made excuses without an instant offer of a refund, I'd simply never come back. It feels better to treat a loss like that as insignificant rather than letting the entire room know that $14 is obviously a serious sum of money for you.

My point here is to demonstrate that oftentimes being super-sensitive to your expenditures only makes them greater down the road. By quibbling over $14, you may get charged hundreds more in the future because you'll have the reputation of someone who insists on getting the larger share of the pie from each and every interaction. The vet may just start charging you $50 for every $20 procedure you inquire about in order to cover their ass in case it ends up costing them more time than expected. Or perhaps that restaurant starts charging you the full corkage fee when you bring in a bottle of your own wine when previously they would've just opened and served it for you gratis. Nobody in business likes to deal with the guy that has to nitpick every transaction, and those memories last a long time too.

Life has taught me that more money comes my way when I'm less concerned about getting what I've got coming to me at every interaction during my day.

What if it was your pet that made the test take that much longer? Would that change your opinion about the $14? Did you even ask if your pet was a good patient for them?

Those bills are reasonable. Every time I go to the vet it's $50 minimum charge for seeing her. Usually the bill averages around $150 a visit with medication costs 4-5 times a year. Last January it cost me $4000 alone.

The fact is the vast majority of doctors are complete prikks. I've had many of them as clients, and in my opinion they're even bigger assholes in general than attorneys (and that's really saying something!).

The reason for this is simple: due to the vast amounts of studying and schoolwork required to obtain their chosen degree, 99% of them grew up being complete fukkin' nerds. They were the kids with their nose always buried in a book, and never learned to properly interact with other kids.....much less the cool ones.

This pattern of nerdiness continued all the way thru med school. Then, once graduated, all of a sudden people began calling them "Dr" and actually giving a sh*t about things they say. They could even talk to women and not be kicked in the nuts or duct taped naked to the flag pole.

So, as is apt to happen, this newfound respect goes straight to their nerdy head. They begin to think they are God, and basically have the attitude that they are superior to everyone else, while still trying to overcompensate for those 26 years of seclusion and spending their weekend nights in a library. God forbid you happen to remind them of some of the "cool" kids from high school, because then you can rest assured you will spend a fukkin' hour over the time of your "scheduled" appointment, get totally fukked in the ass on your bill. And you might as well forget about scoring that prescription for Xanax or pain pills, cause these prikks love nothing more than to hold sh*t like that right over your fukkin' head!!!

But either way, Centaur, I think you did nothing wrong, pal. If anything, this should simply help to strengthen your resolve that you pulled more ass back in the day than that fukkin' dork ever dreamed of!!

                                            Well done, pal.

The reason for this is simple: due to the vast amounts of studying and schoolwork required to obtain their chosen degree, 99% of them grew up being complete fukkin' nerds. They were the kids with their nose always buried in a book, and never learned to properly interact with other kids.....much less the cool ones.

Zeta, I dont think the question is if he did the right thing or not but more specifically did he handle the situation correctly. I could say that bringing up the issue wasnt wrong but maybe he handled it wrongly. I feel certain I could have gotten them to honour their initial $20 quote and love me as Im walking out the door.

Zeta young man, perception is everything in life. I can tell someone to kiss my ass and have them thanking me on the way out the door, its all how I say it. Perception.

Zeta you havr a bright future. Just need a bit of grooming.

It's done all the time out here, and while most people get charged a corkage fee of $20-$30 for it, it's still a far more reasonable option than the 400% markup most restaurants apply to wine out West. Furthermore, once you cultivate a reputation for taking care of the people at your favorite restaurants, it's almost never applied. I doubt I've paid a corkage fee since 2006.

How many skunk gorings have happened in your region lately? You need to get out of the office more often...I'm guessing your a lawyer. puke.
Only one, but since it was the youngest cat I've ever had to take to the vet because of injury, it sticks out in my mind. I'm guessing my little cat tried to go hang out with the Mama Skunk's babies and got shown the door with no room for interpretation. Poor think limped home reeking of skunk juice with a broken front leg.

any of which will probably treat you fairly and give love, compassion, and respect to you and your pet.

Even if not, I trust that scuttlebutt would takes the tales of how awesome I am to deal with to the other one. There was no animal clinic, if you called at night, the answering service would just call the vet at home who was covering overnights and weekends at the time. Welcome to country life.
