The "experts" don't even have a great track record with the #1 draft pick in the NFL, so who'se to say they are great at judging college kids who they have probably watched 0, 1, 2, or 3 times? I mean Jamarcus Russell was the #1 pick in the draft, so now they are going to be great picking high school kids?

People change over time. Walk ons could be in the NFL in 5 years, and "blue chip" recruits could be in jail in a year or kicked off the team. I'd guess there is some correlation between recruiting class and play in 3, 4, 5 years but just because your team misses out doesn't mean shat.

probably not. Auburn, florida , alabama, few that won years ago did not have best class.

    of course it does.

that why teams with the best talent are always in bcs bowl games. talent is much more important in college than coaching. that's why the top recruiting classes are for the most part always winning over teams with less talent.

Means nothing. Most kids change dramatically once they enter college. Take a farm boy who lived in a town of 200 people in HS and moved to a huge university. He will be like a fish out of water for a while.

    I do.

    Try this on.

These are the schools that have signed the most 5 star kids the past 10 years.

    1. Florida
    2. Alabama
    3. USC
    4. Texas
    5. LSU
    6. Ohio State
    7. Oklahoma

    Notice anything?

They all have won a national title in the last 10 years, Florida and LSU have won 2.

More evidence. No school has won a National Title without having at least 2 Top-5 recruiting classes within a 4 year period. That is pretty wild, and it shows you how important having talent is.

Of course it matters. Look at fla classes in 06 & 07, & look at the success they had 06-09. Top classes don't guarantee success, but they hel

Indicator, but means nothing. See Kyle Wright as #1 overall HS player, or Jordan Futch rated above Andrew Luck, ad infinitum. What happened to 5* and #1 overall Willie Williams? What about the 5* Brown brothers?

By all accounts, Miami had the #1 class a few years ago, they can't even win a bad bowl game. Secondly, there are varying firms that rate classes, if Rivals and Scouts disagree you can't simply make your Top 5 list = 8 schools.

With all that talent, aOSU was a 2-TD underdog to a team that isn't on any of those lists. And Okla hasn't won a title in the past 10 years, try harder next time. You'd be as correct to point out that those teams won because of great college HC - Saban, Miles, SweaterVest, Brown, Meyer [Paterno, Bowden, Jimmy Johnson, Schnellenberger, Spurrier, Osborne, etc]

The 1986-89 Noles had as much talent as any football teams ever, and couldn't win a title, and had better recruiting classes most of those years than the teams they lost to. Hell, a loss to SoMiss kept them out of the NC game one of those years.

USC had the most talent 2001-2010 inclusive and won one title, continually choking to lesser teams like a woeful Stanford team, OregSt multiple times, a .500 Cal team, etc.

    So what do you need?

    Speed at WR, DB
    Powerful D-Lineman

QB's can be groomed/schemed with good coaching
O- Lineman can be groomed ( take a farm boy, teach him technique, show him the weight room and the athlete meal plans).

The reason the SEC kicks ass is because their D-Lines are unblockable for weaker teams, and the sheer speed other teams can't keep up with. Instead of worrying about the #14 QB in the nation, you need lots of fast kids, and blue chip DT's and DE's.

Oklahoma won the National Championship in the 2001 Orange Bowl-----10 years ago exactly.

No service has ranked Miami in the top 5---in the last 5 years. Not Scout, Not Rivals, Not ESPN.

    Try much much harder.

This is fact. The 7 teams that have signed THE MOST 5-star recruits---have each won a National Title in the last 10 years. Not open for debate. Period. Game. Set.

5*'s are 33% to make the NFL (get drafted)

    3*'s are 5%.

coaching has a lot to do with it, but of course good recruiting helps.

as far as hard stats, how could you possibly work the numbers?

The productivity of Miami's bountiful 2008 haul is no surprise to those who follow recruiting. ESPN rated the class No. 1. Scout.com and Rivals.com ranked it third and fifth, respectively.

Randy Moss signed his letter of intent with Notre Dame. Then he got in trouble his senior year in high school and they denied his enrollment. He then transferred to Florida State. While redshirting his freshman year (and serving a 30 day work release jail sentence) he got busted smoking weed violating his probation. That's how he ended up at Marshall.

Roethlisberger didn't play QB until his senior year in high school which is why he wasn't highly recruited.

Brandon Marshall was also recruited by Florida, but they thought he was too much of a head case. Plus they were also recuiting Andre Caldwell and Chad Jackson if I remember correctly.

Rodgers didn't get much pub, but that's because he played for in small town in northern California and his frame hadn't begun to fill out. He got plenty of attention once he spent a year in juco and was rated a 4-star recruit when he signed with Cal.

Damn... Martin, as my son would say... "you just got served..."

As for does it matter? Sure, but it isn't any guarantee of anything. Tennessee had the #5 recruiting class in 2007 and only 5 guys from that class made contributions on the field... at all. Give me a class of guys with really good talent and great heart and want to. I'll let you have the class of great talent and average heart. I'll win. A lot of these guys it depends on what attitude they show when they get to campus.

I read an article about the top 150 high schoolers from 2007 on ESPN, so many never even saw the field, amazing. Too unpredictable
