    Riding lawn mowers

Looking into getting a new one.

Wow! The prices have really jumped over past 3-4 years since I last looked, or really paid attention.

Used to be a 42inch average riding lawn mower was around 1200-1400. Everything I'm seeing is easily 1500-2000 - and that's if I can find one.
Both Walmarts by me are out of all 42in. The Lowes only has zero turn ones in the 4000+ range. Said they didn't know when more stock was coming.
HD was out of all riding lawn mowers from 38in up to 50in. They had a 30in and then it was all zero turn commercial style one's all easily over 3000.

Another thing I've noticed looking into riding lawn mowers, is that apparently MTD owns the brands and/or is licensed to manufacture, and makes pretty much all the standard riding lawn mowers.

Stopped by a local tractor place that sells mostly John Deere and all they had was expensive commercial walk-behinds and zero turn.

Any lawn mower/yard tractor experts on here that know anything about production costs vs factory markup vs wholesale vs retail?

I'm curious how much it costs MTD - or any of the manufactures - to make an average lawn mower and how much is markup - and how much a local business or big box stores get mowers for vs their selling price.

If it is just your lawn your mowing and it is 2 acres or less just get a 30in walk behind. Don't be like my buddy he bought a 7k zero turn for a 1 acre lot and then goes to the gym and walks on the treadmill 🤪

If you have an Ace Hardware store or a Home Depot in your area they usually have a decent selection, bought a low end Club Cadet a couple years ago for about $1500 & it's working fine. There's not a lot of mark-up on those things unless your looking at the high end commercial units so there isn't much negotiating to be done. MTD makes a number of different brands - don't buy the cheap shit they sell at Walmart you will have nothing but problems with that junk.

This guy strapped two $400 push mowers to his motorcycle to make a ride mower.

    America!

I doubt there is a lot of profit in those under $1500 models.

Plus everyone really wants zero turn.

See if there is a store named The Tractor Supply Co. in your area. The one closest to me has a 46" Cub Cadet for 2k, 42" Troy-Built for 1700 and a 54" Husqvarna in stock right now. and 5 other models that might be in your range that are part of there regular inventory but aren't at the store I checked online currently.

    You can in Australia.

Local guy in my small town claims he was hauled into court for DUI after a cop spotted him driving his zero turn about 100 yards up the road after mowing his girlfriends lawn and breath tested him.

I bought a Ariens zero turn 42", at the end last summer. It was on sale for about 2700. I really like it. Cuts your time in half. I mow probably 2 acres around the house. The cattle take care of the rest.

They say once Elon Musk finishes building his hyperpoop mass transit system.

He'll move on to robot lawn mowers, with a sunroof.

I live in a Town House. I don't cut grass. I don't rake leaves. I don't shovel snow. I pay less taxes than a house. Anything else on your mind?
