Make a video, but make sure you wear a shirt in the pool.

Last summer I was fighting the PH, buying overpriced BS at the pool store.
Go to lowes or Home depot and buy muriatic acid. Just be careful... it is acid.
But I love saving a few bucks, and living dangerously.

Supposed to be 80 in Minny on Saturday. I keep ours at 90. It’s small so it’s fairly economical.

If your salt water generator is working correctly, you should never have to shock your pool unless a massive rain storm or something that dropped a lot of crap in the pool. You should NEVER add anything to the pool but an oxidizing agent (i.e. Chlorine). Stay away from algae treatments that usually have copper or some other metal in it. You can keep a pool clean with just simple liquid bleach. You need to know how much by testing your water and using a chart. If you use liquid bleach, you will never have issues with a pool. Once you get tired of hauling bleach around, you can then move to a SWG. The only thing you have to do with a salt water pool is add acid to counter the PH drift.

Be careful using shock and pool pucks. They will either raise your CYA or your calcium and eventually you will have to drain some or maybe most of your water. Go to TroubleFreePool.com for everything you need. DO NOT TRUST Leslie's or local pool companies. They only make money when you need to add meaningless shit.

Here in Houston, my pool stays open year round. I have a heat pump (and pool cover) that keeps the pool at 90 degrees most days unless the few days where we have heavy freeze like a few months ago.

This chart below is a must read for pool owners. CYA is the single most important reading for a pool. The amount of CYA in your pool determines how much chlorine you need to maintain to keep your pool clean. If you have very little CYA, you do not need a lot of chlorine. If your CYA is high, you will need a lot of chlorine ($$$) to maintain a clean pool.

CYA (Stabilizer) Minimum FC Target FC
    20* 2 3-5
    30* 2 4-6
    40 3 5-7
    50 4 6-8
    60 5 7-9
    70* 5 8-10
    80* 6 9-11
    90* 7 10-12
    100* 8 11-13
If your pool is a swamp or after a heavy rain or someone dumped trash from a sewer in your pool, then you need to slam/shock the pool at a higher level of chlorine until it clears up. You need much more chlorine and you need to keep adding it until the pool clears.

    CYA (Stabilizer) SLAM FC
    20* 10
    30 12
    40 16
    50 20
    60 24
    70* 28
    80* 31
    90* 35
    100* 39
How do you know how much chlorine you have to add for a 40,000 gallon pool that has 30ppm CYA? There's a pool calculator. https://www.troublefreepool.com/blog/poolmath/

Caution. If you are using pucks, you are increasing your CYA. The more you increase your CYA, the more chlorine you will have to use to keep your pool clean. High CYA means spending more money on chlorine to clean. This is how the pool stores make money. Stop using pucks and most shocks (dichlor and Trichlor) that add CYA. Calpo adds calcium which is okay until your calcium levels get too high. Stick with liquid bleach or a SWG.

Pools are akin to attention whores. Sweep daily, run the filter two hours a day. One of the greatest joys in life is disassembling the filter drum and cleaning the green slime off the four large filters inside. Plus the chemicals heck if it was for my experience as a lab technician I'd be lost.
I'm very familiar with muriatic acid. Nasty stuff! Its the trials in life that create character I guess. O yes can't exit without mentioning wire brushes and replacing skimmer doors.
