The Best States ranking of U.S. states draws on thousands of data points to measure how well states are performing for their citizens. In addition to health care and education, the metrics take into account a state’s economy, its roads, bridges, internet and other infrastructure, its public safety, the fiscal stability of state government, and the opportunity it affords its residents.

More weight was accorded to some state measures than others, based on a survey of what matters most to people. Health care and education were weighted most heavily. Then came state economies, infrastructure, and the opportunity states offer their citizens. Fiscal stability followed closely in weighting, followed by measures of crime & corrections and a state's natural environment.

California ranked last in urban air quality and 45th in "low pollution health risk," although it was 13th in drinking water quality. The state also found itself second-to-last in voter participation, 44th in community engagement and 38th in social support.

Illegal Immigration, rising crime and the homeless tent city problems are all growing disasters. California is going down hill fast, California Pensions while generous are over inflated and the city is running out of money to pay them. Can't fix our roads now and gotta implement gas taxes at the pumps to raise tax revenue. State taxes are high. Cost of living isn't cheap either. It's just a joke how my State is going down the tubes!!!

California both one of the best and one of the worst, so many different factors.

I'm 90 minutes the ocean and the same for the snow, few can say that.

California is so big you can make what you want to out of it, including education and health care.

Because of that truth it's curious to see the #49 in opportunity. Although opportunity could mean anything.

Definitely a lot of negatives to Cali, like so many states, but the positives that Cali has nobody else even comes close to having, with the exception of some Midwest areas who also grow food.

The rest of the country loves to bash on our terrible political climate and non business friendly ass munches in Sacramento, but the truth is they wish they all could be California.

It's that envy that allows Cali to go to shit and still remain bad ass because everyone goes to shit, but there's only one California.

However drive down the freeway to Downtown LA it's drugged out disease pit of homeless and illegal immigrants.. Our major freeways are PACKED more then ever, hard to get around now when driving there is so much traffic.. I can go on and on..
