NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A Brooklyn basketball coach is under arrest after allegedly shooting a parent who had gone to his home to talk playing time on the court for the man’s son.

The NYPD says on Dec. 22, just before 10 p.m., the 47-year-old victim went to a house on Jefferson Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Police say at some point there was an altercation and the man was shot in the neck.

Todd Myles, 42, has been charged with attempted murder, assault, and criminal use of a firearm. Initially, authorities say Myles told them a third person shot at both him and the victim.

When the father recovered, he told investigators it was Myles who shot him.

Police say Myles is a basketball coach at Robeson Business Tech.

The Department of Education released a statement Friday afternoon about the charges.

“These are incredibly shocking allegations,” it said. “We immediately reassigned Mr. Myles away from students and we’ll work to remove him from payroll as soon as legally possible. We are providing support to the school and are working with the NYPD throughout this investigation.”

According to the DOE, Myles began as a substitute in 2001 and became a teacher in 2004. He began at Brooklyn’s Pathways in Technology Early College High School in 2013.

He has no prior disciplinary history with the district.
