I have no desire to go back and I'm Italian...

Keep your wallet in your front pocket

    Stay away from crowded places

If you go to a restaurant plan on being there all night or you will offend them

    Don't stay too long

    Spain much better

It's a great city, particularly if you are into art. A couple tips: I don't know if you've booked a hotel yet, but if not, try to get one near Termini Roma. It will give you easy train access to anywhere.
If you plan to visit the Vatican, be sure you are wearing pants, not shorts, no matter the weather. I went on a warm day in shorts, and was turned away and had to go to my hotel room to change. It is a world-class museum that will take your breath away, but when all is said and done it is still a church and security wants people to be respectful.
There is a restaurant that I, and the people I was traveling with enjoyed immensely. Ristorante La Grotta Romana is a few blocks from the Termini. Check it out if you're in the area.
    Have fun.

I’ve been planning my upcoming summer trip all over Europe for a while now, but I’ll have only 1 day in Rome.

I’m planning on seeing the following, in order of importance (to me):
-Vatican City (St. Peter’s Square, St Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel)
    -Colloseum
    -Pantheon
    -Trevi Fountain
    -Spanish Steps
    -Piazza Navona
    -Castel Sant’Angelo

That’s about all I can fit into a day in Rome. Of course, some vino, gelato, and some Roman-style square pizza.

Go to the Sistine Chapel first. There is a back way from the chapel to St. Peters. Saves you waiting in line for both. Shorts have to be below the knees and shoulders covered. I would recommend hitting the Sistine Chapel first on that list because the line will get long. Go early.

Preorder you tickets for the Colosseum. If you don't and don't mind paying a little extra there are people who form groups out front for the exact purpose of getting in the group line. Another time saver.

Trevi Fountain/Pantheon/Spanish Steps can be done one after the other.

Castel Sant'Angelo is free to get in and the line is not long.... should not take that long to see.

Piazza Navona is more just taking in the the environment

You can get it done in a day.

That's funny...My parents just got back from a 2 week trip to Italy and they said the same thing. They are a little older and don't eat a lot so the traditional Italian dinner was too much for them and they were not treated kindly by the wait staffs because of this.

Use a money belt under your pants. Pick-pocket artist everywhere; bathrooms, trains, walking on public streets.

Do go to Cinque Terre. A few hours from Italy, but worth it. 5 little cities on the Mediterranean sea

Yep. Italians want to entertain you the whole evening. A lot of folks that visit there don't know about it and make the mistake of eating and leaving. They don't roll like that.
