So, who's the greatest American Rock and Roll band of all time?

I don't like the Dead, but they have to be up there.

    Aerosmith is a top 10

Chicago to.o (especially with Terry Kath as front man) they fell off some when Peter Cetera fronted them when Kath died.

    Van Halen?

There is none. Musical taste is subjective.
Even what classifies as "rock" is debatable.

If you categorize them as rock I'd say Metallica. Like snowball said though, it's so subjective

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Funk_Brothers

quantitatively speaking it would be the FUNK BROTHERS

The opening titles claim that the Funk Brothers have "played on more number-one hits than the Beatles, Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys combined."[1]

poor dwightie and brooks the sad sacks of SBR forum.

Dwightie, I set you up again. Pretty good idea you would post immediately after my entry so I purposefully placed the word quantitatively, knowing you would contradict me. and it worked again, you can't win for losing can you.

oh dwightie you and brooks bring me so much joy and entertainment, I should actually pay you guys a yearly stipend

It's a tough one for American bands and it's obviously subjective. There are the big sellers, then there those that played live so well. There were even both. So many underrated bands that played so differently. I mean, what is American Rock and Roll?

A lot of bands mentioned in this thread were American, unique and some became supergroups, they all deserve a top spot. Some have been emulated by later groups, some not even close.

Then, to just scratch the surface, you have bands like Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers, Huey Lewis and the News, The E-Street Band, and even the Jimi Hendrix Experience...which rocked.

The old guys may get influence points but, for example, The Black Crowes put on one hell of show, with strong musicians at each spot.

Anybody ever heard of Robert Randolph and the Family Band? One of the best live bands I've ever seen.

Then you could think American and American music which all of the above encompass, but something like the blues or Jazz bands of old, the influence they had is amazing.

It's no easy choice and I could change my mind multiple. times I suppose given they were the highest touring band year after year, could encompass so many different styles of music because a guy like Jerry Garcia could do the work of a half a dozen different guitarists, and the musicians they brought, the Grateful Dead aren't a bad choice for American. They may not have the hits, but when they were on it seems like all else is imitation...

It depends on what you consider Rock n Roll. Also... depends on the generations and decades involved.

When people talk about Chicago.. or The Who... or Rolling Stones.... or Eagles... or Led Zeppelin.. or The Doors... I'm like... turn that sh#$ off.

But if you were in your 20's - 30's back then... you'd love that sh#$.

I didn't understand that kind of music.

I guess you could give my rock vote to Aerosmith, Van Halen.... But Rock n roll was fading out when I entered high school.... Alternative Music was making way with Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins etc.

I love the alternative music, anybody who knows me knows I've been a friend of the Killers since their start up over 14 years ago.
They just keep reinventing themselves CD after CD after CD, Flowers is one of the best songwriters in the game, Vannuci Jr. is a top ten drummer. Without question my favorite band, I know, I know, it's not a band for everybody.

Killers, Chili Peppers,Green Day, and Foo Fighters are the best alt. bands currently touring.
You want to call Arcade Fire alt. then fine throw them in the mix.

Money Shot named three of the four greatest of all time alternative bands, I know it's an oversight, Nirvana is the G.O.A.T

I don't consider U2 and alt. band, plus they're not American.
I used to love Nine Inch Nails, and Midnigjht Oil, but they're out of Australia.

Freddie Mercury was the best there ever was.

    My guy is Brandon Flowers.

Daltrey is up there, so is Lennon, Jagger. Robert Plant (even though I'm a Queen guy, Led Zep is the greatest front man of all time.)
