Should I just fork over the coin and get an iMac, so I have the best hardware, the best OS, the fewest viruses and malware, the best picture, etc.? Costs a ton but I tend to keep shit for 10 years, like my Dell PC that just died.

Would also match awesome with my new iPhone when I get it.

We just got our daughter an Air book for Christmas, and I got a MacBook Pro with touch bar.

Now it's well known around here that myself and Russian Rocket are probably the most tech savvy fellas here, so I can speak as an expert on this. I'm a big Apple fan. I have no time to be fukkin around with viruses and other whoreshit. I basically use the Macbook for SBR, sending emails, and occasionally watching porn. It's excellent with all 3. As far as the touch bar goes, to be honest, it's not all that great. I prob could've gotten an Air book like we got my daughter, paid half what I paid, and been just as good. BUT...if I ever want to attach emojis to my emails, it's damn nice to know I can do it with the touch of a finger.

Here's my take on Apple vs other whoreshit. If you can afford Apple products, you buy them. Period. Why the fukk wouldn't you? No virsuses. No bullshit you have to install and check on and run anti whatever the fukk. It's a no brainer. Hope this helps.

If you just want something to surf the internet with and that syncs seamlessly with your iPhone, fine, get a Mac.

But if you just want something that's cost effective and works, with which you can also get some serious work done with, then get a PC.

I worked for a company once that was all Mac, and everybody that knew anything about computers was miserable there. We were using accounting software that was half a decade out of date because all of the reputable stuff was PC only. Most of the productivity software we used was by Microsoft....

After 10 years you're switching to a Mac from PC? Hmmm...Unless you're into heavy web design or music editing, I'm not sure why in the world would you overpay for a Mac box? There are PCs out there, that can do just as good a job.
The only reason why many musicians and developers are using Macs is because there are certain industry-related applications that run only on Macs.
Macs are more secure, than PCs, but do you really want to pay an extra thousand bucks, for a protection that you can get with a free anti-virus program?

And forget hardware component - you would have to literally learn a new way of navigating on your computer...different commands, clicks...etc for almost everything.

Save yourself some money and get a brand new Dell.

I'm not sure there is much anyone can add to what RR said imo. Like opie said, if u can get a mac get it assuming that ur everyday uses are casual as he described in surfing and streaming.

I've replaced every device inthehouse with macintosh products over the yrs bc I'm a casual user. The only thing that's annoying is that older models may have a hard time running the most recent osx versions

MacBook Pro is the way to go, no moving parts...mine has been running for two years non stop and no issues, no failed HD always ready to go...I do agree about having a PC at work, most of our company computers are Dell because of the applications needed but we all have MacBooks that we bring in as well so we have all bases covered. The Dells are much slower especially since they are all connected through our servers as we use many shared files but they get the job done. For my home, MacBook, for work Dell and MacBook.

What are you going to use it for, do you program? You may be better off just getting a iPad and linking it with your iPhone. Opie is correct for the reasons why.

They aren't necessarily more secure it's just that their are far less viruses/malware programs written that attack Macs, why create a virus that only targets 10% of operating systems. Like others have said unless you need one for work you are over paying for what the normal user needs.

While you're making a very valid point, it's not just the quantity of viruses that is being made for the specific operating system, that we need to pay attention to here. As you probably know, that you can completely destroy a machine with a single rootkit.

At the end of the day, what makes a machine secure is not really its software (native + downloaded), but its system administration, i.e. what the user makes with the machine. OS X users do not behave the same way as Windows users, simply because OS X is build in completely different way, than Windows system.

Malware usually enters a machine through explicit user action, like installation of some software package that turned out to be infected. OS X users tend to install less third-party packages, mostly because OS X comes out-of-the-box with more accessories.

Also when it comes to supporting hardware, OS X has its own drivers, so the normal Mac user plugs his new device: either it works right away, or it will never work. There is usually little point, for a OS X user to try to download and install third-party drivers. On the other hand, for Windows, driver download is the norm. This does not mean that third-party drivers are often infected, but it implies that Windows users are accustomed to downloading executables (think virus) and running them with full administrator rights.

So in a way Macs are indeed more secure, and not because there are not enough viruses out there to harm them, but because the end-users, like you and I, do less, than Win users, to expose ourselves to the potential threat.

I'm surprised at some of the negative stuff in here about Macs. Obviously the price is a big deal, but outside of that, I thought most people agreed it was a no-brainer that Macs are much better. (what I've heard) Just built better from top to bottom... more built for the USER as opposed to with corporate interests in mind... less bloated with sh-t you don't need... WAY less issues with viruses and malware... not to mention that you can get retina display which looks pretty unbelievable.

I don't know, I go back and forth. I could have already (and maybe jsut should have) bought any old reasonablly powered Dell or HP or Acer or Lenovo PC for 500 or whatver, monitor for another 150, security package/whatever for another 100, etc., etc. and be done with it for <1,000 and be fine...

But, I don't know, just was thinking might as well have the top of the line home computer if I'm gonna buy one maybe? Have you guys looked at the iMac 27" -- it's insane how badass the 5K image is. Throw a nickel down on a hoops parlay, cash it, done deal. 2K ain't the worst if I'm gonna have the thing for many years.

Power-wise, should be about the same as a top desktop. i5 or i7 processor, prob terabyte hard drive or fusion drive with the SSD, .. OH, and everyone says it comes with amazing software that's way better, stuff like GarageBand, awesome photo editor, etc. I mean I've heard...?

I may need to just get drunk and then go impulsively decide, haha. I suck with deciding anything.

I have an IMac, Macbook pro retina, and a 34" ultrawide with windows 10. Love the ultrawide the most especially for watching porn and multi-tabling poker. Don't use the Imac much anymore, but I use the Macbook pro when im lazy in bed or on the go. If I had to do it over again I'd probably just get a windows laptop for cheap with a good battery life and keep my 34" ultrawide for other when i need the big screen and more power. Macbook pro retina is nice but not worth the $1500 when you can get a $700 windows laptop that is just as good.

A reminder for all that I'm talking about a desktop here. A home computer. I don't travel for work and am not worried about mobility at all. So whichever way I go, I'm interested in a sitting at home experience, with a full-sized keyboard, full-sized high-quality monitor, etc. A laptop doesn't really match my needs. The new iPhone I'm gonna get will suffice for any mobile needs.

I have an imac (desktop) and a lenovo yoga 2 laptop.

The imac is sick man but honestly hard drives were not mean to stand upright like in the Imac, so the life span on it is probably not as long as a normal desktop.

A couple years ago I got a dell refurbished off business lease i7 with 8gb and 250gig hard drive for $174.
Upgraded to 16gb and added a 256SSD for another $100 and its fast as hell and I never had a problem
with viruses or anything. There are always 40,50, 60% off and free shipping codes for these.
We run dual 27" monitors with it without a additional video card.
Yes its from 2011 or 2012 but it still kicks ass for the price.

I'm neither a girl nor an idiot (idiot may be still up for debate) and I have a Mac. 2009 Mac Pro purchased used in 2011 and still runs like a tank. Upgraded gpu, usb3/esata, lots of ram. Runs my HTPC (Plex and Kodi), handles all video/audio ripping/encoding/muxing, whatever without breaking a sweat. I open it up and blow any dust away every six months or so. That's it. Best purchase I ever made, computer wise. No antivirus/malware software, don't be stupid and it's not needed. Windows 10 is fine (use it at work) but earlier versions don't/didn't hold a candle to OSX. Pricey, yes. But to be fair, the older Pro's were server grade computers. Turn them on and leave them running 365, no problem, unlike commercial grade desktops that sold for half the price. A similarly graded Dell or HP ran about the same price as the Mac Pro. And I can buy a commercial desktop for what my Pro would sell for right now (at almost 8 years old). See how much you can get for that old PC.

All that said, if all you need is something to surf the web, watch your media, etc., then a moderately priced HP or Dell would more that suit your needs.
