A US mother who gave up her infant son for adoption at age 16 and reconnected with him 18 years later has fallen madly in love with him, and now the pair face incest charges over their torrid sexual affair.

New Mexico woman Monica Mares, 36, and her son Caleb Peterson, 19, said they are willing to face a prison sentence to defend their unconventional love.

“He’s the love of my life and I don’t want to lose him,” Ms Mares told the Daily Mail.

“My kids love him, my whole family does. Nothing can come between us, not courts, or jail – nothing.”

Ms Maris is the mother of eight other children, whom she is not allowed to see since she was charged by New Mexico police. But she remained unfazed, saying the only thing she cares about is being with her lover.

“I have to be with him,” she said. “When I get out of prison, I will move out of Clovis to a state that allows us to be together.”
