    500,000 USA People Homeless

Reuters) - More than 500,000 people - a quarter of them children - were homeless in the United States this year amid scarce affordable housing across much of the nation, according to a study released on Thursday.
The report, from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), said the number was down slightly from 2014. Many U.S. cities are confronting a sluggish economic recovery, stagnant or falling wages among the lowest-income earners and budget constraints for social welfare programs.
Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Oregon and Hawaii have all recently declared emergencies over the rise of homelessness, and on Thursday Seattle's mayor toured a new encampment for his city's dispossessed.
"Despite national estimates, New York City continues to experience near record homelessness," said Giselle Routhier, a spokeswoman for the Coalition for the Homeless, an advocacy group.
According to HUD's latest tally, nearly 565,000 people were living on the streets in cars, in homeless shelters or in subsidized transitional housing during a one-night national survey in January. Nearly one-fourth were aged 18 or under.
That number was down 2 percent from the previous year's count and 11 percent from 2007, HUD said.
The actual U.S. homeless population is likely higher than HUD's snapshot suggests because many people living without the means to put a roof over their heads are beyond the reach of the survey, sleeping on a friend's couch or a relative's basement.
HUD reported separately this month that roughly 1.49 million individuals used a shelter in 2014, up 4.6 percent from 2013, agency spokeswoman Heather Fluit said.
Even as homelessness has waned nationally, 17 states posted increases, including the two most populous - New York and California, up nearly 10 percent and 1.6 percent, respectively, from last year.
Thirty-three states and the District of Columbia recorded declines, with the biggest drops found in Florida, Texas, Georgia, Michigan and New Jersey.
"I am glad it's trending downward, but a 2 percent change (nationally) is pretty much flat," said Nan Roman, president of the National Alliance to End Homelessness, in Washington.
A lack of affordable housing, combined with slumping pay at the lower end of the U.S. wage scale, has been cited by analysts as a driver of homelessness in a number of U.S. cities.
"We are 7 million units short of affordable housing for low-income people – that's a big gap," Roman said.

Yet there's over 18 MILLION vacant homes in the US and over 77,000 empty, unused government buildings. Sure seems like something could be worked out for the homeless in this country??

I bet the last 10 years a few trillion dollars has been spent dealing with the problem and it hasn't gotten better 1 bit. My guess the money allocations are being used in the wrong areas or people just don't want to improve their situations.

I think the number is a lot higher than 500,000.......I thought Hawaii had 300,000 in that state alone. But I may be way off.

We're an uber-capitalist society. It's a culture that creates haves and have-nots. Those who get out and work at it are rarely homeless. Vets notwithstanding, that does need to be addressed. But for the rest, the country doesn't need to do anything to help more than they're already doing.

This is what we have. Deal with it. Make the most of a great opportunity you have by living here.

NBC news had a segment on yesterday about a city going around picking up panhandlers and putting them to work
for the day, a couple of times a week @ $9 hour cleaning up vacant lots. Forget where they are doing it.

The panhandlers were thrilled to be working and get paid the same day in cash. Now, let's do this for the welfare
people. Clean up their hoods, paint and repair their homes. Builds confidence and pride. The clean hood would
impress businesses to set up shop and create employment.

You're absolutely right, it comes down to jobs. People shit on corporations, and rightfully so sometimes, but they are the main job creators of the world, and when you don't have that......

Funny how before Syrian refugees came along, every republican I know wanted to cut social programs across the board. Kick people while they're down. Now, those same republicans are saying we should take care of our homeless people as a rationalization for not letting in the refugees

Hard to make this shit up

Soon this will pass and they'll be back to bitching about too much money and resources going to the homeless

its always something with those judgemental motherfukkers

What people continue to avoid is the total $20 trillion debt issue and the long term effects this will have on our children and their children. It doesn't matter who is getting the handouts, it will all come back to bite us on the ass eventually. Work or suffer, that will eventually be the only two choices.
