    The setting outside looks awfully cold. Snow on the ground and sleet. Hmmmmm Yes, helium makes balloons go up because the air is warm outside surrounding the balloon... but I believe colder air would knock em down? Seems like it would.

    No, Helium makes the balloon go up, because oxygen is 7x heavier than helium. Take a filled balloon from a warm room into a cold room and it gets smaller, flies no matter what, because it is always lighter than air.
    Fun fact: it is the second lightest element and is the second most abundant element in the observable universe, being present at about 24% of the total elemental mass, which is more than 12 times the mass of all the heavier elements combined (wiki)

    It's a density thing, so yes cold air is more dense than warm air but its that helium in the balloon is much less dense than the mix of oxygen and nitrogen in our air that makes it elevate
